Defund Tourism Tofino would be a good start.....use the money to solve the water shortage problem, first, finish the re-zoning process to protect local residential housing, ensure that the hospital has the required tools to function properly and then MAYBE we can once again advertise for more visitors.
You are absolutely right 11.41. Defund THE MONSTER that has eaten this town. They are costing the residents big time. put the money towards the above listed items. The town would be far better off without Tourism Tofino. In case anyone wonders, yes I make my money from tourists and still think what they are doing is totally wrong.
This may be unfounded gossip and rumor.... I have no proof to offer...... but I've heard that Mayor Dan and Councillor Stere are of the opinion that the village needs to remain without further development, and hence no expansion of the water supply is required at this time.
Probably the first step in improving the water supply would be to obtain a firm commitment from mayor and council that this is indeed a top priority of the district. All we've heard so far is ....."maybe later".
In the recent water report presented to council the consultants listed the top projects (in priority) to increase Tofino’s “raw” water supply as this is what Tofino’s needs most. (apparently our on-land storage capacity is currently 2 times what we need)
The first priority listed by the consultants being expanding the Ahkmahksis reservoir. That should be Tofino’s Mayor and Council’s absolute first priority!
Instead the Mayor announced a further study on the potential raw water supply options (already done in existing report) and a “no additional growth policy”.
He went on to say that the expansion of the Ahkmahksis reservoir could take 5- 10 yrs!!
What!!??
How is that being responsible to the taxpayers on Tofino? We need to pressure this Mayor and council to act now and stop kicking the can down the road.
Tourism or not we need to start avoiding these “ local threats of emergencies” every summer. It’s stressful on everyone.
