Whisky Dock Repairs

CONSTRUCTION NOTICE

June 6, 2019
For Immediate Release

First St. Dock Structural Repairs - June 2019

Please be advised that the District will be undertaking structural repairs to the First Street Dock beginning the week of June 24th. The works will take approximately 2-3 weeks, and focus primarily on the braces and piles underneath the dock’s surface.

All reasonable efforts will be made to not disrupt regular boat and deck vehicle operations and the contractor will work around active dock operations. However, there may be periods of time where portions of the dock will be closed to public access and vehicular access may be impacted.

Frequent dock users may be required to share the floats extending on the east and west sides temporarily.

We apologize for any inconvenience as we undertake these necessary repairs.

Who pays for this?

Well thanks to the federal government's asset divestiture program a while back we, the town, foolishly accepted the gift of the dock that the feds did not wish to keep maintaining. It even came with some money that didn't last long to pay for the upkeep of it.
So now we the taxpayers are on the hook for the bill I believe estimated to be around $80,000 this year but I may be way off on the amount budgeted.

I heard a rumor that the harbor by the dock was going to be infilled, saving us those repair bills and providing parking for offshore vehicles.

Meanwhile the dock is like boats, we keep throwing money into holes in boats in the water trying to keep the infrastructure from sinking.

Fortunately, all the moorage , loading and unloading fees as well as the rent from Tofino Air cover all the expenses.
