Today I received some historical water test results from Environment Canada for the Tofino area. All of the Tofino harbor waters and surrounding areas are currently closed for shellfish harvesting due to fecal coliform levels.
Areas are closed to harvesting when counts are above 14/100ml.Notable test results were a high of 350/100ml at Deadman's Island on Oct.5,1998 and a high of 130/100ml at Mackenzie Beach on Sept.16,2009. Beaches are considered unsafe for swimming at 200/100ml.
It would not be good if we start seeing beach closures during tourist season or at any other time for that matter. If you want to get a copy of this information just send a comment with your email and I will forward it. Comments with emails won't be published.thanks,Ralph
