Provincially sanction with multi-sectoral participation Tofino had it,s own committee with at times up to 20 people representing as many aspects of the community as could be identified. And it took about 10 years all told start to finish. And Josie you weren't there. Now here is the news. There is a reason it made progress and why it worked to the extent it did. Everyone had there say, on an ongoing basis. Last thing I wont is a narrow group focussed on their own ideas telling the rest of us what to do.
Besides, people have legal rites to carry out business activity. Is someone going to tell existing business that they can't reopen because Council has a different vision.

I feel that post-secondary students are among the most vulnerable . Those that want to come to Tofino to study botany and biology face incredibly expensive housing as it is mostly targeting the tourist trade. Somebody should build a student dormitory and charge a rate that is lower than that of tourist accommodation. To accommodate this , the District of Tofino could create a special zone that is assessed at a lower rate than hotels or vacation rental properties. In exchange, the operator of the dormitory would agree to rent to only students . Somebody once told me that if I thought there was money in tourism that I should see the money in education !! I think this would be a good way to diversify the Tofino economy and look after students.

Why have we wasted money on the Official Community Plan? It is created through a formal process and becomes law. Now it is apparently useless and irrelevant. The Politburo that is Tofino Council wants complete control of your life. Maybe they can map out a job for everyone, and set a goal for the grain harvest, and how many rubber boots and bottles of vodka need to be produced before winter. This kind of centralized planning has never failed before.

When it came to a choice between the narrow confines of the district of Tofino boundaries and that of the vast clatquot alberni regional district it seems that we were on the short end of the stick. All that the Mayor and Council had to do is defer to the Provincial and Federal Governments. It is these two levels of government that will decide when and how businesses will open. Local governments role will be limited to their mandate- local services such as water, sewer, parks and rec along with fiscal responsibility.
How business is conducted, specifically, will be outlined through guidelines set out be the Province and in some sectors of the economy, the Feds. The minutia will be decided by the business owners and the public will very likely hold business to account. The type of business that continues to operate and thrive on the west coast will be determined by established zoning, in place licensing and market forces, like it always has.
Mayor and council could have demonstrated that they understand their role. Then the leadership could have gone on to opine as to how the economy of Tofino may be to single minded, talked endlessly about nothing, spoke of times ago, and all agreed to have a report created that will be of little to no value.
It would have been calming to hear that they were focused on tasks within their “wheelhouse”. Imagine if they assured us that there would be a sharing of the financial pain, which would help ease ours come tax time. That would have established a sense that we are truly in this together.
On a certain level it is frightening that, during this crisis, when we the public are unable to attend meetings in person, our local government would endeavour to “restructure” our community and venture on some ill fated attempt to conjure up a more equitable one. one component that's missing is the area of cultural tourism. tofino has narrowly focussed upon the failed environmental tourism sector which burns as much gas per day as commercial fishing (if not more) getting all those people out there to see the pristine environment. and the accommodation industry with it's logical spin off of expensive eating and drinking. Other sectors have developed on their own without input from council i.e. surfing, kayaking, sports fishing & whale watching.
it will definitely be painful and difficult for council to invent new enterprises(besides more government)that will capture 1/2 of the tourism income stream. maybe just give the poolelanders 1/2 of pacific sands gross income.....would that work?

Sound familiar ?? Tofino mayor Josie Osborne: “We have to take quick action, especially in parts of our economic recovery, but not at the expense of the social side and the public health side. I have some very difficult discussions coming soon about when and how the region reopens to our predominant industry, tourism, in a way that is appropriate for the most vulnerable people in the region. I don’t know that there are going to be compatible goals here immediately and we’re going to have some tough times talking about that,” Osborne said. This and previous councils have been more worried about multi-million dollar upgrades to the downtown , complete with custom cobblestone sidewalks than the “ vulnerable “. Members of Parliament for the Comox Valley have confirmed they are donating the portion of a recent pay hike to help out people in need locally during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) released a list of MPs who were giving the pay raise as of April 1 to charity. The list has been circulating on social media. At the end of March, the organization called on MPs to donate their annual pay raise back.
This month, MPs received a 2.1 per cent hike, which increased based salaries to $182,656. The annual hike has been practice since Bill C-30, which as adopted 15 years ago to set annual salary and allowance increases.
To cancel the raise, Parliament would need to be recalled, but Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that he is not recalling it before April 20 in order to help fight the spread of the novel coronavirus. In response, many federal politicians have offered to donate the increase. (Trudeau is on the list of those donating the raise.)
Courtenay-Alberni MP Gord Johns is included on the list. He posted a statement on his Facebook page on March 31: “I was pleased to donate my Member of Parliament cost-of-living increase to local organizations and agencies that are providing front line services to vulnerable citizens throughout our riding.”

Members of Parliament for the Comox Valley have confirmed they are donating the portion of a recent pay hike to help out people in need locally during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) released a list of MPs who were giving the pay raise as of April 1 to charity. The list has been circulating on social media. At the end of March, the organization called on MPs to donate their annual pay raise back.
This month, MPs received a 2.1 per cent hike, which increased based salaries to $182,656. The annual hike has been practice since Bill C-30, which as adopted 15 years ago to set annual salary and allowance increases.
To cancel the raise, Parliament would need to be recalled, but Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that he is not recalling it before April 20 in order to help fight the spread of the novel coronavirus. In response, many federal politicians have offered to donate the increase. (Trudeau is on the list of those donating the raise.)
Courtenay-Alberni MP Gord Johns is included on the list. He posted a statement on his Facebook page on March 31: “I was pleased to donate my Member of Parliament cost-of-living increase to local organizations and agencies that are providing front line services to vulnerable citizens throughout our riding.”
my understanding of this weirdness is that the new finance hire, while with the chamber of commerce/tourism tofino was the author of a scheme to tax all businesses in tofino 5% and give the 5% over to band councils to do as they please.

Accommodations are actually listed as an essential service. It's only through the strong sense of community that all the resorts and vacation rentals have remained closed. There's nothing actually stopping them from being open.
