this is put forth by the same people responsible for the previous Tofino Housing Corporation. They refuse to leave the Common Loaf to look for work and want the Village of Tofino to get them free housing. There are many, many places for rent.Yes,you have to pay rent.
Yes I agree with 11:52. The same people keep putting this front and center. Please make it stop ( I believe it was put to rest), there are currently quite a few housing options in this community that fall within a broad spectrum of affordability. You must save and work in order to make this a reality (like we all did and do), not hold your hand out. Look around town, there are a number of young local's building homes, they have obviously worked hard and made good choices to get where they are. It's up to the individual to make things happen for themselves not the GOVERNMENT OR LOCAL HARD WORKING TAXPAYERS.

Some thoughts on the concept of "affordable housing"
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.
Of course this town needs affordable housing. The average income here is $22,000 per year. That's $11 per hour. You cannot buy a house if you make minimum wage. Spewing hateful statements at the working poor people of this town as well as stomping on the good people trying to bring affordable living opportunities to Tofino makes you part of this towns problems. Maybe you should leave and sell your house for the price you paid in 1990.
Both deaf children no longer live on Neill Street. They are both 6 foot plus and moved on in life so should you. There are also other deaf children In the community that attend school, and frequent the park. The sign is there to slow people down in the event that a child cannot hear the engines of cars speeding to catch the LCB before it closes. Note there are no side walks and mass parking for events and tourist season.
There is affordable housing within 30 minutes of here. Its called Ucluelet. If you can't afford to buy so what? There are quite a few long term rentals. Not too mention why should my taxes be used to build someone else a cheap house? To that I say piss off! I would much prefer to see my taxes go to infrastrucure improvements first.
Those numbers are ancient and the average income is brought down by transient workers and servers that fully disclose gratuities. Those earning $11 an hour should consider renting.Taxpayer sponsored housing only increases dependency on the state and promotes a culture of entitlement.
I would like to see sustainable housing offered but more like they do in Victoria. For instance instead of hammering the developer for sewer upgrades or sidewalks they ask the developer to create a % of affordable housing.... maybe it is just a combo rental/owner.
I worked with the Canadian Home Builders in Victoria and one project that was really interesting was the affordable housing project near the new walmart. Banks, construction companies, geothermal etc.... were all involved... with very little government. The only thing the council did was allow rental suites and lot coverage amendments, other then that they stayed away and let private enterprise deal with it.
I hope we can remain open, to all the ideas and solve this issue for everyone. People should have a place to live and provide for themselves...

I like all these comments very much.
I wish that Council would spend as much time and money on housing for seniors and the disabled.
Excellent comments. All of 'em.
Is there still a DEAF CHILD AT PLAY on Neill Street? Just wondering.
Good things come to those who... work their asses off and never give up.
If I am correct, the deaf child now stands about six foot two and is married with one child of his own. He no longer lives on Neill St, I believe.

I own my house and would still support affordable housing for Tofino. I guess I'm thinking about others - like my kids in a few years.

Dear Unknown,
"They are both 6 foot plus and moved on in life so should you."
Thanks, I appreciate your respectful reply to a sincere question.
However, I don't believe that people see the sign while speeding to the Liquor Store, unless they're driving their cars backwards.
