Now that I have read the Globe and Mail comments from Josie I see she will steer all her work into the tourist trade in Tofino, What about the people that live here all year? Will she get our Parks and Trails done and how about the Gym at the school, so many things sitting idle while are council decides what to do! Too bad Josie did not talk to the citizens that live here besides the ones that are in the tourist business, she could at least put something in the mail.

I would hope Mr. Bennett is willing to void the cost of this silly non-election. I'd like to see if George Smith would absorb any cost to the tax payers of Tofino. Life happens, but why should we pay for his lack of commitment.

The only fair thing to do is cancel the election and open up the nomination process again. Others will throw their hat into the race and we can have a real election. Seems like rules are getting in the way of logic.

yeah we should get perry to kick in too for his lack of commitment. He started this whole ball of wax.

I think an issue here is lack of commitment. Perry took the job as mayor and then he moved out of town within a year to a new job. Tough decision but when you have taken a serious job as mayor you should really think about where you are in life, what can you give and would you move out of the community. George threw his name in the mayor ring and one has to wonder if he really thought this job through. It is a big commitment. Now he has changed his mind a few days too late.

Please people if you are going to run for mayor you are making a big commitment that you must follow through. This is not a regular job. I think Perry and George are costing the tax payers of Tofino an extra $10,000.

And I am posting anonymously so I keep the former mayor unhappy.

11:45. Really? How do you see from the article that Josie "will steer all her work into the tourist trade." That is one sentence in a newspaper article. One sentence out of dozens she no doubt offered to the journalist. Educate yourself. Meet her, hear what she has to say, talk to people that know her. Do your own work and don't rely on this blog or anyone else's opinion to form an opinion. Josie has worked tirelessly for years for the people of this town. Ask her how many non-profit organizations she has sat on and contributed her time and energy to.

1:14. Ridiculous comment. If people wanted to run, they should have thrown their hat in the ring in the first place. It already was a fair, open and democratic process.

Why isn't the school gym open for evening use?

That would be a question for the new Resort Services Dept.

I wonder if the people in Winnipeg are following the legacy of Mr. Smith... It's not too late!

I'm quite sure that the litigation lawyers of Winnipeg are quite happy to see Smith arriving on their doorstep

Josie, isn't going to change anything. She is just another person sitting in a chair. This current council would serve us best if they all sat down.

I believe we would be best served if a could get a list of new candidates. Candidates with a back bone!

Not necessarily. While it is true that candidates could and should run based on their beliefs that they can do a better job etc, there are other considerations. It is also true that political doctrine would dictate that you don't "split the vote". Thus, if George was running on a popular issue that enjoyed support of 50% of the populace and the other contender had a nominal 50% of the remaining vote, another candidate who emerged espousing much the same position as George would dilute his share potentially, handing strategic victory to their common rival. Even more Machiavellian still would be if George (who curiously and suddenly found no compunction to run) never intended to run in the first place...

I am grateful that someone is stepping forward to become our new major. I wish Josie the best of luck! Wouldn't it be wonderful if under her leadership Tofino would turn into a community that would actually work together in a constructive way to make this a better place for everyone instead of being "head butt city"! One can always dream!
