Everybody in town knew it was a leak . The only exception was Mayor, council and some staff. Shameful to let a leak persist for months during a water shortage.
20,000 gallons per day equal about the daily water use of 100 homes. indeed shameful! Another prime example of the district people treating the citizens/taxpayers like the enemy to be disregarded and ignored.
At the public meeting a young man, apparently with Gibson Contracting bravely challenged them about fixing the leak.... he was shushed. A certain Disrict Official who has spent the better part of his adult life "sustaining" the community, Pooh Poohed the idea and said they, the District, could get to it in the fall. What a joke. Unfortunately the joke is on us.
I am hearing grumblings from DOT council members that dan and tom are allegedly against any type of growth and are not interested in increasing our water storage. Fine to limit growth but not by holding us hostage with water. Get the water storage issue fixed ASAP and stop playing games with the people who voted you in.
There is a simple solution if 12:16 is correct. Rest of council needs to make a motion and vote. Councils don't need to run on consensus, or agreement or the avoidance of hurt feelings.
Your allegiance is to the people, the future and your conscience. Put on your big boy pants and vote. I did not vote for unanimity, but to get shit done.
fixing that leak should show 5% less consumption for a day......but it doesn't. still gobbling up over 500,000 gallons of water daily. there's something wrong here. maybe check the meters for campgrounds, resorts, fish plants, etc etc
We'd have water for fire protection year round if we had the Centennial Creek dam restored. Plenty of pumped water capacity in there. I'd estimate the volume of our Barrs mountain water tank. Used to feed the town drinking water. It would be better to not have to tanker water to a fire but it is a possibility. Possibly too much financial sense for this town to do the dam restoration. They would prefer to declare an emergency to shut down the town.
I love coming to Tofino. All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz and I am fine. But now you got this water thingy going on here and dude, it is a bummer. Like, since everyone started talking about the low flow and stuff, the surf has been..... like ....just all crumbly and small. Ever since you guys got all bummed with that low flow thingy and shut things down,...or whatever you do here. I don't know but some locals say the flow picks up in the fall. Then the surf gets big and gnarly. I can't wait. I want it humongous and tubular man. Let er rip.
Today is Aug 2, Are we still on a stage 3 water restriction? The VR next to me is constantly rinsing off their rental boards and leaves the hose running while they clean off from the beach. I listen to it daily for the last few weeks and its families with 6-8 ppl all using that hose so it lasts quite some time. As someone who lives here full time ( and thru the last water shortage) I resent the fact that locals are asked to conserve and the tourist public ( not all) are completely blissfully enjoying the water. Its not up to me or anyone other than the district to police it. Unfortunately some VR owners like my neighbour just want the $$$$ to spend where they live ( out of town) and not to educate their guests. I am over showering into a bucket and worrying about every drop of water that I use. As I and we pay the most to use this water . Tofino is lucky it got rain! and its not anything but that luck.
Guess what? We're going to run out of water soon. Again. Remember this: the mayor refuses to listen to anybody that knows anything about the system besides the staff and himself. This is not leadership but seems to follow in the current trend of dictatorship allegedly a new democratic dictatorship. If there is such a thing. Back in July a suggestion was put forth proposing a a local group of long-term experienced people who understood the water system be assembled to act as an advisory board to our mayor and council. That suggestion was ignored. the suggestion to come up with a back up plan should we run out of water was likewise ignored. The conclusion of the water meeting back in July left us with the impression that let's not worry about water until we run out. Well here we are. His answers reflect buzzwords like micromanagement and his own questionable expertise in managing water systems. People get elected presumably because they present themselves as someone willing to listen. Getting elected does not convey an automatic 1/2 century of experience in water regards.
In the 90's Tofino had a Water Advisory Board composed of ex council and private sector expertise. People who understood the water system with practical experience and technical expertise. They had no official power but they advised council. It is difficult for incoming councilors and new inexperienced mayors. It was a useful institution. No such body has existed for 25 years Tofino has been a merry go round of administrative infrastructure minders. Lack of continuity
No one was able to read the writing on the wall. The old timers understood what was in the ground.

It must have been a consultant who told "him" about the leak as he doesn't listen to anybody else.

btw 1 cubic meter of water = 264.2 gallons of water...........the leak was puking out around 75 cubic meters per day.

New campground open and town is busier. People quit conserving when they heard about the gross negligence associated with the ruptured water main .
