What a foolish response when there was no threat. This reminds me of Fraser's dumb actions over a preceded water crisis. Nothing has changed, just more inept leadership.

We, as a community, should feel deeply ashamed of our elected officials and bureaucrats for allowing this kind of nonsense to happen.
re 6:53 It is correct that no tsunami warning was ever issued for Tofino however there was a major earthquake and as I understand it the provincial Emergency center did not get in touch with us in a timely fashion. Maybe a case of better safe than sorry......? However, our local radio station needs to stick to the facts and not opinion....also -- lots of people drove to the school - should they assemble there or at the community hall?
If people think that an emergency is real, and nnot just a practice run, they will react more like what they would naturally. If such an event was hapenning often, then i would worry. But as far as i know, nothing like this has happenned in over 5 years. It was an inconvenience but hardly a major imposition on the public's life. Now people know how much panic and confusion occurs. Now imagine it was a real situation adding more chaotic elements to the proceedings. Now we work out the kinks. There have been many false fire drills that were not announced at schools throughout our life. Did we complain? It is a much better guage of a town's preparedness then saying, " OK. On friday oct. 27 at noon, there will be a tsunami siren drill. Please, in an orderly fashion, congregate at the evacuation sites. Thank you." Now. How many people would have ignored the drill and went about their daily affairs?
I would also like to know where we are supposed to gather, because there is conflicting information on the District of Tofino website. One area of the DoT site says to go to the elementary school, while another section of the site says to go to the community hall!
People will forget an inconvenience fairly rapidly but will recall disaster or mishap for a long time.A good chance to evaluate Tofino's emergency system.

Perry you should feel ashamed, this is NOT how one deals with an emergency. Saying better to err on the side of caution numbs the people.

At no time was a tsunami warning issued for Tofino.Anyone with a computer or smartphone was aware of this.

At least the Mayor was here.Unlike most issues in Tofino this time he actually did something !
