So ferry fares rise 4% a year? How much has the price of fuel risen since last year? Insurance premiums are much higher nowadays, as anyone with a car or house can attest. How much does it now cost to insure a 500' boat with 1800 souls, their vehicles, and cargo on board?

One comment was to use liquified natural gas as fuel, thus cutting the fuel bill in half. But LNG is kept under extreme pressure; if anything went wrong it would be a disaster bigger than the Hindenburg.

Cutting out the food on board is illogical, since it makes money. Transport Canada mandates a certain minimum ratio of crew to passengers; those crew have to be there anyway in case of emergency. They might as well be generating income.

The truth is that the cost of EVERYTHING is rapidly rising globally due to the govts, ALL major political parties, banksters, and their corporate friends creating endless inflation by easy access to loose money and endless defecit financing. The only thing not rising in step with this inflation is the common man's wage.

If my only problem is shelling out a couple bucks more to cross a large body of water any day of the year, I'm doing alright. At least I live in a country where no one is rioting in the streets because they can't afford to eat.

in the olden days the ferries were part of our highway system across this country, who changed the rules?

You live in a country where people riot in the streets over hockey but only when there's not a strike.Affordable ferries are part of the economic equation for Vancouver Island that has been developed over the last 60 years.

I think if one compares our ferry rates in BC to ferry rates in other parts of the world we are doing quite well. I feel confident that those in charge are attempting to find the best combination of user fees and public taxes to provide the great service that it really is. I don't mind paying the rates as I use the ferry system only occasionally and for pleasure. However, those who must use it daily to make a living should have some reprieve.

The cost of the ferry is already prohibitive for we tourists that want to bring our boats to Tofino. This will be the last nail in the coffin for sure.

It would be nice if island residents only had to pay one way, like the smaller gulf islands. Have a resident sticker for the car or something.
