Why is it you can buy a place in Tofino, own an amazing condo and be forewarned that the condo can not be rented out on a nightly basis.... then come back to council and ask for nightly rentals.... We don't have enough yearly accommodation rentals...

Re: 2:13PM Agreed. Council need to listen to the public and the advice of their staff and not allow this to happen. Don't be bought by the offer of amenities. If they allow this, it will be basically creating a hotel.

The only reason the prices on those Shore building condos are as high as they are is because they generate business income. Take away the ability which they never had in the first place to rent for short term and the value of them drops. Then perhaps they will become more affordable. It is not the town's responsibility to make investors money. Homes are not supposed to be used for investments.

8:27 exactly!

8:27 Agree with your thinking here, but would add that "Homes are not supposed to be used for "commercial" investments"

Canadians have one of the highest rates of home ownership in the world. It is the source of much of the financial security that exists in our country, and a home is the biggest investment most Canadians will ever make. In Tofino, not so much, as an economy of service sector wages and high real estate prices works against most citizens owning their own home. As well, as you identify, commercialization of the residential market drives prices up.
Community life suffers on account of this. Rather than home owners and residents, other interests such as commercial interests and single issue advocacy groups have a high proportion of political sway. So, I say we need more investment in home ownership in Tofino, and I agree it needs to be made by folks looking for a place to live, rather than by those making a commercial investment in residential property.
Impediments exist, some of them the policies of local government.

Tofino needs a general revue of its policies, to develope and promote a strategy that serves the needs and interests of residents and home ownership.

Re 3:13PM Council listened and woke up! They rejected the Shore application by 5-2.

7:31 do you know who voted which way?

Blanchette and Baert voted to allow vacation rentals at the Shore . I wonder why they are opposed to the long term housing that the development was originally zoned for ?
