Any word on the illegal vacation rentals at South Chestermans ?

Anonymous said...

@7:40 - they're still illegal. They come before council on the 28th, I believe.

a Library in 2017 is called iBooks... it's the Eco-Friendly way of reading a book

Illegal in who's eyes ? You people are so hung up on the success of SC - angry you didn't jump in at the time perhaps ? Who do you think pays the highest property taxes in this town ? What do they get for them ?
SC should put gates at both entrances to stop the trespassing and should sue the district for constant harassment on a use that is clearly a no brainer ! Who pays the highest property taxes in this town ?

Business should be allowed everywhere - Airbnb everyone ! VR's for everyone ! Work in harmony - licence everyone ! Work with builders instead of charging horrendous development fees ! Build on the infrastructure ! Build apartments for housing ! Let workers continue to work their tourism related jobs ! This will lead to higher wages & allow others to enter the real estate market should they desire. What else do we have ? Change is constant & inevitable ! Fishing & logging are gone by the wayside ! There is no other industry ? All should be able to benefit if they put the work into it - not just a chosen few !

How are you naysayers contributing to our economy ? So many of you are simply two-faced rejects that have come from aways, envious of others successes & imposing your beliefs on how you think things should be ! Get off your high horses preaching the effectiveness of governments which are clearly self-serving & corrupt !

Time has come to be completely honest & look at yourselves in the mirror !

just noticed my neighbour opened his place on main street.... renting out 4 different rooms to as many guests as they can.... How can a renter of a house be allowed to also have a B&B license ???

Come on Tofino shut this place down, it is bad enough looking from my deck at the Shore building with their nightly stays but now my f*ing neighbour is doing it too! Inspect the place, they openly advertise the crap hole even if it is number 1 on TripAdvisor.... I don't care. It is illegal!

Again what are you contributing to the economy ?
bitch bitch bitch

12:32 is clearly a retard! "Airbnb everyone!" "Build apartments for housing." "Who do you think pays the highest property taxes in this town?"
Yeah, build apartments so the likes of you can turn them into Airbnb rentals. Also the properties that pay the highest property taxes are the ones that are legally zoned commercial not your Airbnb rentals. It's not a fucking free for all Fucktard!

haha
hit a cord did i ?
think about it for more than 1 second idiot !

you show your age & IQ by using the word re*** ! shame shame !
you were likely a bully in school or were bullied
residential taxes are very different from commercial
the way it's going the town looks like a dog's breakfast anyhow
how did the shore ever get approved ?
south chesterman is appropriate !

The Shore got approved over many people's protests. Guess they had the ear of the council of the day with their promise it would not be the hotel it has become today.

South Chesterman was intended to be residential. The development permit would never have been granted for any sort of commercial activities. In other words, it wouldn't exist today if the developer insisted that it be used for what it is being used for now.

12;44
It's not the use of the Shore that is irritating it is the building itself ... how did that get approval ??? it looks like it should be in Vancouver ! It's not 'Tofino' !

1:29
Why then did so many out of towners buy and very few locals ?
Why have so many years gone by if it is so wrong ?
At that time the developer & the realtors were selling them with NO nightly rentals permitted ie : hotel

3:27 the building is a monstrosity.
How? Council allowed it. Regular district staff changes in the past probably helped.

Locals knew the insanity of the prices.
Good question why or how they had the connections necessary legal or otherwise to persuade the district through stalling applications for rezoning to allow their illegal operations to continue. Without these illegal rentals and a lack of sales I suspect they would have lost the building to the banksters. It is a pity that it didn't happen as the banksters could have liquidated the holdings for whatever receiverships usually get in such situations and the building could possibly have ended up in the hands of people actually wanting to live in Tofino.

It is clear the district failure to enforce the bylaws is the real problem here. Has cost the town a residential community it could have had for years now. It is a sad failure of civic governance.

The prices of South Chesterman at the time were not insane. Not sure of the Shore?
I understand their rezoning applications have only come about within the last year and with our current council
And if the purchasers at the time were told they could short term rent. Who's to blame for this? Why are we still fighting it nearly 20 years later? Our taxpayers dollars are being completely wasted and could be better used towards building actual housing. I remember going to a party out at South Chesterman and could not believe how inadequate they were! Definitely not fit for families to live in, plus the strata fees are horrendous ! I really don't care what goes on out there. Just saying.
C'mon Tofino, work with developers to build some housing!

The reason that the cost of housing is so high at South Chesterman is that people are selling their units as nightly rentals. If rentals were disallowed the units would be significantly less to purchase. Illegal nightly rentals, owned by people not living in Tofino, are in effect keeping local buyers out of the housing market. This is wrong. Please enforce the bylaws.

The purchasers at south chesterman knew the no short term rental rules when they bought. No excuses. They were designed for housing not STR.
Both the shore and SC were only allowed to be built on the condition of being used for housing only.

Anonymous said...

sounds like a lot of you are aching to get your hands on a SC unit?
do you really think the values would be less? chesterman beach is insanely expensive!

There's a unit listed for sale at South Chesterman's right now. If you want to change the place so badly, then get your chequebook out and buy it. Once you own it, you have a choice to live in it, or rent it out to "a nice family" to live in. Good fuckin' luck with that.

Right on 1:14 PM. I agree.

There's no hope for the status quo. I swear they love all things dirty, moldy, damp and dysfunctional. Their default setting. Challenge their way of thinking and they will reject you. I refer to the Peter Principle here, where super-competence will be rejected in order to maintain the hierarchy.

"Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither castye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you."

South Chesterman Beach Homes are not suited for long term family living. If the municipality and embittered "chip on their shoulder" followers think that it's possible, they might want to look at Tofino's track record of multi-family residences. Aesthetically and invariably, they all turn to shit. The entire SCBH complex would soon reflect a mish mash of different people's lifestyles, wet suits hanging all over the railings, the grounds littered with Fisher Price toys and old couches, the parking lot chalk full of decrepit old cars, unmaintained exteriors and grounds. Just watch. Take for instance, the recent Gateway development. The same shit is happening there that always happens. How about that newly erected plywood storage shed in front of one of the Phase 1 units facing Campbell St. Wtf is that? And the municipality says nothing. Don't get me started on Vinyl Village.

Landfill at the end of the Esowista peninsula...defended by the locals. No class. The movie Deliverance comes to mind.

Fill your boots.

Haha! Bravo 2:52
Well said and OH SO VERY TRUE. This town is a dog's breakfast of design & planning. Rather than concentrating on what really is important they deflect and waste time on mute issues. This town is full of envious / small minded / socialist / self entitled thinkers. 'Let's close the gate now that we are here and push our agenda'. Ucluelet will benefit from our lack of progress.
