The next tsunami which takes out our water lines from Meares Island will make that decision look pretty stupid. Every resident needs many single use water bottles as an emergency water supply. Stock up from the Co-op while it has them, rotate your inventory, and replenish your inventory in Port Alberni or Ucluelet
The time money and effort put into this is ridiculous. The job of the district Council is to operate the systems and keep the roads and sidewalks in good repair. One of the reasons we have dumb situations like this as well as the entire water problem in this district goes with the narcissist agenda. I.e. my decisions are better than anybody's and I don't need to listen to other information. Hey pal, it's my money you're blowing here and my future and my children's future. Pull your heads out of your butts and wake up.
And, sadly, next election no one will run and we'll get a return of the same group, or since this is Tofino, we'll get a different assortment of leftist liberal thinking environmentalist popularity contest winners.......and nothing will change. Because mayor and council don't actually run the show, as we all know. They're just there to give you the illusion that you have some say in how your village is governed. Staff actually makes all the decisions, who does what, who gets hired, who gets fired, how the paycheques are handed out, who gets the raises, how we all justify our positions and keep ourselves employed (most important task for all staff).......and nothing will change.
Is Byelaw going to patrol the town looking in everybody's front seat for a water bottle? Prohibit the co-op from selling single bottles? Prohibit everybody from buying drinking water unless it's from the brewery in a can?
going back to 2005 and the drastic water shortage hitting Labour Day weekend. It did teach us to pay attention to the water consumption during the dry months of tourist season. The District solution was to dig out the reservoir a bit more, which would allow a some more water despite the fact that it was poor quality compared to sharp Creek. The proposal to go to Kennedy Lake had already been nixed by a referendum. By 2010 it was apparent that we would run out of water again unless something was done… The Ginnard Creek Reservoir did not produce the miracle it promised. The districts action was to get more consultants.... and more consultants. Those of us who understood the Water system and it's limitations made numerous suggestions to do something better than ask consultants until we were ultimately told by the mayor that he had the best consultants and that local advice based on experience was not wanted or needed. Meanwhile, temporary use permits didn't seem to be a problem, nor were the 200 some odd trailers and motorhomes with full-time residents. Add a couple of campgrounds, some affordable housing, a few houses and suddenly we have a problem which is causing the district to get sued. That is the action that goes with virtue signaling.
Are you sure about all this? Seems to me that we have lots of water, the resorts are selling it for $600 a night. Government is collecting tax on all that, plus the extra tourism taxes and fees. Hey Ralph!, Are those same resorts still getting a discount on their water rates? So the resorts and hotels get cheap water, which they sell to the tourists at phenomonal prices, the government takes a nice slice, the resorts make a killing, and the taxpayers of Tofino shoulder the burden. Interesting......
In other news..... Our health minister just spent 5 million on digital advertising to attract 140 medical professionals to BC. Thats over 35k for applicant. Our premier says we need 45,000 more health care professionals. 5 MILLION on digital marketing!!!! Maybe we now need a marketing minister ;)

Glad to see council finally doing something about Tofino’s water problems .

Such progressive legislation from the team :). The peak of legislative efficiency
I've seen more single use pop bottles being consumed and tossed than water bottles here. Are those getting banned too? Co-op pop sales will plummet!

So much symbolism with so little action. Kinda reminds me of an old PM from our past ;)

How about toothpicks? That would surely help the environment.
9% of the annual global greenhouse gas emissions are from tourism. Wouldn’t it be more beneficial to ban needless travel?
