Places like Tofino, Comox, Vanderhoof, and Armstrong recorded spending growth more than twice as fast as their population.

Financial irresponsibility at the D.O.T. ? I find that difficult to believe. How else do you expect the staff to provide the taxpayers with the essential services which they provide? Gotta go..... I'm off to pickleball instruction classes. Then there's a great get together and lunch for seniors at the community hall, provided by paid unionized employees, at exactly the same time that community voluteers at fish and loaves put on the same thing at the legion hall.
My property taxes have doubled. The road I live on is worse than some 3rd world countries. The town has mismanaged the water infrastructure and there isn't enough water. Retirement is becoming harder and harder to due rising cost of living. Why are most of my life issues caused by the DOT?
Because we have a bureaucracy that has become more interested in furthering their own interests, in terms of benefits, pay, more union members, etc than working for the benefit of all of the people that live here and pay the taxes........
my fear is the flow of parking money will be used to pay for more staff and unneeded town improvements instead reducing our taxes. Not one penny of parking revenue should be used for anything other than tax reductions for the residents who have to put up with the tourist circus
Tofino Ratepayers Assoc posted similar graphs a few years ago. but their analysis didn't quite jive with this report. It was far worse....Check it out at TofinoRPA.
pssst.... you left out "job security". Most important is to always keep up the narrative where their "valuable professional experience" make themselves indispensible to the functioning of the community. It's unbelieveable how many people are keeping themselves employed doing the municipal government business of a village of only two thousand souls.
Tofino lost money on its 2023 downtown pay parking program due to staff accounting and budget planning errors, which led to an underestimation of the costs and the actual amount paid to Robbins Parking. The program was expected to generate revenue but instead had a net loss of approximately $30,000 because the budget did not correctly account for new parking kiosks and the total contract costs with Robbins. ---from google AI
Sorry, your taxes will have to be increased to cover the losses from the parking money "misunderstanding". Staff feels bad, sends thoughts and prayers. Mayor Dan "voices concern". Council votes to pass whatever staff tells 'em to pass.
Forget about development being sustainable. Government isn't sustainable at the current rate of expense and failure...... to manage the water responsibly. At least better than the resulting limits to growth policy which means no growth for the taxpayers and the tax base.
About five or is six years ago DOT passed a five year budget/spending plan that contained a 53% tax increase to pay for what was in the budget ...That rate of increase was not considered alarming by council and staff..
What Tofino needs is a "Parliamentary Budget Officer" like the feds have. There are no effective checks and balances on municipal government spending, they can pretty much do anything they choose.
I thought Tofino was all about "Sustainable Development'. The only thing being sustained is the profit margins of the large tourist opporators. and the comfortable lives of the office staff.... Co conspirators.... Smaller and smaller percentage of the population can afford the place. Your life is being "whittled away" Lot's of turnover. .....We were better off with logging and fishing. That sustained a real community. The DOT is a political front that justifies its exploitation of the residence.with political correctness to hide its self interest. Like some communist regime controlling everything for their betterment. ........Money, Money Money from your pocket to theirs. Don't say Boo.
I'm watching the government shutdown thing in the USA and watching those federal bureaucrats scrambling in panic, trying to protect their "trough" from which they've been feeding for years. How can we get the same thing in Ottawa? or at the corner of Third and Campbell?
Are district staff on strike? what's up with the reduced hours at the district office? Do these reduced hours indicate that the normal work volume can be done in much less time, at much less expense? Can this somehow be re-shaped into staff reductions?

There's a reason Tofino taxes are so much more than Ukee's...right?!

Some basic research will tell you that District staff are not part of the BCGEU union.
Do some basic research. District staff are not apart of BCGEU
Cupe so much better :)
