Worst financial deal the DOT has Ever made and now they want more. The only truly affordable housing created in in the last 20 Years was created by Chris Lefevre in the form of the Gateway project. This was a free market project not a financial nightmare like the DOT and the THC dreamed up. Clearly no one with a business mind sits on council or is employed by the dot...tax tax tax...raise fees and licenses rates and give raises to underperformers hire unqualified Staff that wont rock the ship that only sails left. truly a ship of fools.

In the world of unrealistic expectations getting elected to the city Council promotes one further to bizarre expectations.
Akin to being crowned a superior being in all aspects of human endeavour without having to consult the peons ever again.
Without any experience or education pertaining to the workings of the real world.... Besides environmental idealism.
This includes a great degree of business and financial acumen that gets things done in the most economical way because the taxpayer needs to be considered............ But municipally and federally the taxpayer is simply a dull and dumb source of more and more money....... There is only one pushback for this type of nonsense but it's too late for the rate payers assn. to weigh in to do a cost benefit analysis of the machinations of the THC and the alleged management company.
we're blind too when it comes to noticing that the Director of the Tofino housing corporation came to us from eco-trust as a surprise gift because of the affiinity it already had with catalyst........but that's old news and too late anyway. we've been hoodwinked/had.

Could we please stop referring to it as "DL114". That doesn't even sound like the name of a place, let alone someone's home. Even "Poole's Land" spoke to home, community, a place with an identity. Over the coming years many of our fellow citizens will be making this their domicile, they deserve something different from "DL114", something that speaks the history and true character of the place.
How about, "Back in the Slums".

THC wants all the money they can get. Now.

THC knows that this entire deal is a house of cards, ready to collapse.
The taxpayers of Tofino are going to be on the hook, paying for decades to cover this debt.
When the taxpayers finally figure out the extent of this scheme, and how much it's going to cost them, finally then the funding will be cut off. Tens of millions will be gone.

THC wants all the money they can get. Now. Cause the golden goose got elected elsewhere. They ain't gonna get no more from D.O.T. Now they're on their own.

They've been given enough money, probably too much. Let's see some results from that before you come whining for more, Mr. Scott.

Thousands of private sector housing units stonewalled. Units that would cost the taxpayers nothing. Units that would actually contribute hundreds of thousands of dollars upfront and annually. Long tern contributions would be millions to municipal coffers. All stonewalled.
Now this.
Sorry affordable housing dude. the Bank of Tofino is closed.

Yes there is no reason to give Mr. IAN SCOTT one more penny of taxpayer money. He's done the job of pulling as much money as he can get out of the district to do what anybody in Tofino could have done. mr.scotts claims to relevant experience seem to be based upon his experience with catalyst and ecotrust and the botanical gardens owners. Environmental nepotism if you ask me. The forward motion of the housing construction was stopped long long ago until such time as Tada! The former mayor could introduce Mr. Scott to the procedure and hand him the blank checks to the tune of a few hundred thousand dollars and still counting. Yes enough is enough.

Good Luck Tofino Taxpayers. What you thought was a money pit was just a warmup, a systems cash flow test.

The real money requests are only now going to start.

The joke only gets more ridiculous. We gave them millions so the "non profit" can means test everyone of their tenants. You heard it correct. They don't want people who are too poor. Catalyst is intenting to means test every tenant. Why are we subsidizing this?

A published article in the Sun showed how these subsidized "Not for profit" "Affordable" housing projects in Vancouver are actually no less expensive for tenants. The rental rates are no lower than for profit rental projects that carry full frieght for costs and actually contribute taxes as well. It is truly hard to beleive, but it is unfortunately all true. How can our public officials be so........I am trying to find a nice way to say stupid.
Sorry, can't come up with any adequate substitute. Stupid it is.

Perhaps we need a few councilors with a little business acumen. But I forget the purpose of government is apparently to spend money....right? But I forget the main benefit of these projects(apart from the few who make it a career to suck the town dry). The main benefit is so that some politician can hang his hat on the project and pretend that they actually accomplished something. "Look I got you afforable housing. We got it done" hurrah!

5:11PM I fear that you're correct. The sharks are loose in the tank.

Those numbers are totally incorrect.
Air Bnbs were quicker to recover from COVID shutdowns, and have come back stronger than the resorts.
The figure that they have only 57K from the air bnb tax this year is total BS, especially that they've given the total for last year at 188K

Foreign workers from the major resorts are applying for these affordable housing units, so they can then use them as residential addresses from which they can sponsor their family members to also come here from the old country, to work.
This works great for the resorts who can snap up this cheap labor supply.
The taxpayers of Tofino end up subsidizing foreign workers by supplying them with cheap housing and subsidizing the resorts by housing their workers.

Meanwhile, people who have lived and worked in Tofino for years get left out in the cold.

I'd like to hear T.H.C. address this issue. Who gets to rent these units? What's the criteria? Who decides? How do we know it's being done fairly? The opportunity to rent one of these discounted properties is a thing of real value-- How is it being distributed? Is there a list of "friends" in the D.O.T. office? In Catalyst's office? In T.H.C.'s office?

The taxpayers of Tofino are paying for this scheme. They have a right to know it's being operated fairly and above board.

Thought I read VCR contributing $250,000 or in that neighborhood. All earmarked for "affordable housing". All for tourist worker accommodations

Just heard of a recent sale that went down in Tuff, 1/2 acre, 1000 sq ft home for $1,700,000. To be used as staff housing.

Really, the town has gone for shit. How is anyone working in the tourist industry supposed to afford that. Soon there will be no one living in a home. Just a community of seasonal workers and place holders. So sad.

Anyone remember Requiem for a Heavyweight. Just take the money and stay down, take the fall. A once proud community of independent people.....Just take the money.
