Interesting! the COOP manager expresses concerns they may run out of fuel at the pumps. Wouldn't that be a pain in the communal butt.

I recall attending a council meeting last spring. The COOP was applying to replace their fuel tanks at the gas bar. Replace existing tanks with better more environmentally secure and larger tanks that would "better secure the continuity of supply in an emergency". and build a new gas bar and convenience store. Also additional food storage.(more ruffles for the Mayor) Two new housing units thrown into the proposal to boot.

Cost to Tofino council and Taxpayers......NOTHING!

To make a long story short, Dot Council voted to turn them down. Flat out No. Didn't like the roof line posed one councillor, Why should we encourage the oil business to sell more carbon producing fuel posed another. Council could not see any "demonstrated need". Ha Ha! This would be comedy if it were not true.

Council, too often, seems to lack necessary objectivity in their decision making. And our current situation with the road closed to larger, fuel supplying vehicles makes their consideration look petty and stupid.

Copy/Paste from Facebook, Tofino vent and praise:

Small biz startup in Tofino: get in line, pay fees, permits, wait, pay more fees. Some councillor / the revolving CAO has issues with something. Revise, wait some more, pay again, and again. Finally open after much delays if not bled dry already.
Big biz startup in Tofino: write the (minimum) five figure check. Fees, permits. Amend the ocp or give a zoning variance. Pay more fees.
Small biz startup in Alberni: you want to start a business here?! How can we help? The mayor is free to talk tomorrow! Have you seen this list of eligible grants?
