Thanks for posting this. There is actually a Community Information meeting just before this from 9 to 9:30 that the public should be aware of. It has been advertised as regarding "General Provisions" and bylaw "housekeeping" in the paper for a couple of weeks. This Zoning bylaw amendment contains changes that may effect a lot of people with B&B's, STR's and other home occupation.
One thing I noticed that I think has been added since the original draft of the amendments is that B&B owners will not only be limited to 6 people per property, they will only be allowed to have 2 guests per room.
There are also other amendments prohibiting B&B's from being operated out of homes with more than 4 bedrooms and STR's from happening in dwellings with more than 3 bedrooms.
There is lots of other stuff in this amendment so I hope people are aware of it. You can pick up a copy at the office or go online to the March 13 meeting and scroll down to the Zoning Amendment 4, Appendix 1.
This will probably be the last time people will have a chance to give input before this becomes law.

2:21 what is the problem with the above changes? Seem pretty reasonable to have the community set some limits.

As an example there was a group of 20 people this morning at the spa place at the end of Neill Street. WTH are there 20 people at a place like that? I don't believe that they are licensed to have that many people there.

Seems to me that these situations are why there are changes being made.

Without some controls on the numbers of visitors to this town we WILL run out of water.
Nor will we have any long term rentals available for long term residents.

there are already reasonable laws and limits in place. global investment in real estate is what caused unaffordability in Tofino. locals use their properties as b and bs etc. to bolster their income to pay their mortgages. all this time spent scapegoating landowners rather than creating affordable housing and possibly a more diverse economy so one can live in Tofino.

Take a look at the list of people in attendance at the latest council meeting....a mayor, 6 councillors, 7 Yes SEVEN! high paid municipal employees, and, last on the list, the public. Do we really need all of these snouts at the trough, in order to manage the affairs of a small village of less than 2,000 souls?
Don't overlook the fact that each of these "managers" has a host of underlings, assistants, and other assorted minions who alledgedly do the actual "work" of operating the local government..... and every one of them get paid more than your average working stiff, struggling to make a living and keep a roof over his head.
This is wrong!
It's legal, there are arguments to justify it, but it's WRONG!
It's simply corruption: public funds being diverted to serve the benefit of a "chosen few", and until it gets cleaned up, nothing else will ever be accomplished.
Bureaucracy will continue to feed upon itself, your tax dollars will continue to be squandered,and the corruption and justification will continue.

Be sure to attend the upcoming "Shorebird Festival", a long time favorite event of her worship, the mayor. Bring your dog, let it run loose on the beach and chase the birds away.. No problem. The mayor refuses to enforce the standing bylaw regarding off-leash dogs, she likes to allow her own mutt to join in the lawlessness. Nice example, Josie. After all, why should the number one public figure in town obey the law?

One thing for sure; The District's attacks on the short term rental sector are having a dramatic effect on the availability of long term rental housing. Like NONE. What a stupid waste of money, effort and time. Good idea, attack tourism.

Did you know that there were as many as 20 people staying at a place on Neil St? Wow! Let's get those b*st**ds run of of town, right now! (who cares if they spent a few grand here in town this weekend, that's only money to pay wages to cooks, cleaners, and dishwashers) Who needs it!

Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town
Tofino Municipality has more money coming into it's coffers every year than any other town its size, in the province. Yet we don't have enough water to approve any housing development. We can't afford housing development cause we don't have enough money.

The money is being pissed away on bureaucracy. The whole operation is so top heavy it's sinking under it's own weight. "Best hire a consultant to figure it out". "No doubt something we can't afford not to consider". "Without a study we will have no plausible deniability". "I will expect a report on the subject by next meeting". "Of course there will be overtime to factor into the equation and catering as well". "This saving money can get darn expensive...But it's got to be done". "Let me consult my schedule", "Er,... Umm..., things are looking kinda tight". "I don't know if we can afford to save anything this year". "I'll put it in the plan for next years budget". Note to self.....save some money, next year! If it doesn't cost to much!

who needs it? the cooks, cleaners, and dishwashers. that makes up the huge majority of the jobs available in town. Other than that you can go work for the fish farm or fish plant. Why you all so upset about the 20 people at Neil st. house? what's it to you? Absolutely nothing. I am not supporting the current municipal administration but why all the attacks on private business? Again. what's it to you?

ahh ok. Mostly I am talking about quite a few people denigrating the airbnbs in town. I would go after the illegal vacation rentals but I wholly disagree with changing zoning and bylaws that current legal rentals will become illegal with another law or zoning change. My current house has its zoning changed twice in the last ten years. I can see situations occurring where you design a house a certain way due to zoning and then the parameters change. That is highly problematic as building housing is ridiculously expensive.

The problem is that all the housing that would normally available for employee housing have become vacation rentals by the greedy bastards that own them. Great that all their guests are creating work for cooks, cleaners and dishwashers. The only problem is that these workers, because of all the vacation rentals have nowhere to live. I am all for the District trying to adjust this imbalance.

this a fallacy in causation. Just because you minimize the possibilities of short term rentals does to necessarily create more long term rentals. It will cause more houses sitting empty and a reduction in places to stay for tourists. Long term renting can be quite problematic and many landowners do not want to take the chance. Classist bullshit rhetoric of all landowners being greedy. just trying to pay their mortgages and find ways to bolster their other income to be able to live in Tofino. Investments are risky. but I am sure landowners are just all a bunch of rich bastards.

Anyone that believes that the district can do anything about the housing shortage by hurting small business is absurd. Creating more far reaching laws stifling all aspects of what purports to be a free market capitalist society does not create housing. The district needs to allow for developers and landowners to be able to develop more stock. That is the only thing that will increase the housing options. Perhaps incentives for a more diverse economy so one can have an income that approaches living wage would also be helpful.
