Tofino Council Wants Climate Change Warnings on Gas Pumps

http://www.westerlynews.ca/news/363400341.html?mobile=true
Tofino is one of the most carbon intensive towns in BC . Everything pretty much gets trucked in.Between Tourism Tofino and local tourist operations millions are spent to encourage tourists to come here. They don't walk here or bicycle or arrive in sailboats.....they arrive in carbon spewing vehicles.

Let's hope that tourists don't take the warning labels seriously and reduce their carbon footprint by staying home.

Councilor Greg Blanchette said “They too will see these gas pump labels and they’ll think, ‘Wow, Tofino is a pretty far thinking community.’ It really fits well with the Tofino brand as being a leader in environmentalism.”
How can Tofino be a leader in environmentalism when the bulk of our collective incomes comes from people burning fossil fuels to come here for no reason other than recreation ?
How can Tofino be a leader in environmentalism when we still dump raw sewage directly into our harbour ?
Perhaps Tofino Council will demand warning labels on all toilets and urinals ! "Please don't flush as use of  this toilet or urinal contributes to water pollution which puts many species of shellfish at risk of Fecal Coliform contamination and could result in closures of local beaches for recreational use"

All of this might seem like some flaky joke but every time council directs staff to spend time on issues that aren't related to the running of the District of Tofino it costs the taxpayer money. We are facing a 22% tax increase in this and the next four years , do we really need bylaw officers checking gas pumps for warning labels ?

A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all !!

Council should just ban tourism and limit the population of Tofino if they want to stop climate change. The current model of constant expansion of tourism is not sustainable.

Tofino's council also passed a resolution asking provincial politicians to protect the forests from commercial logging.

Tofino was at the epicentre of protests to protect Clayoquot Sound in the 1980s and 1990s, and with that background Mayor Josie Osborne said councillors passed a resolution last week to protect the Walbran Valley and other old-growth forests on Vancouver Island.

"Tofino is one of the places in British Columbia that really can see the benefit of having protested the government's plans for logging in an area and we've benefited from that."

I wish tourists would stay home. They have made living here unaffordable for families that don't own vacation rentals like our Mayor and MP do.No room for the working class here anymore.

Isn't it irresponsible of council to consider posting these labels before the results of the $20,000.00 "climate change analysis" have been received and considered. What's the sense of having the study if council s going to "jump the gun" and take knee-jerk actions that haven't been properly researched? Sounds pretty reckless to me. On the other hand, it presents a great opportunity for the mayor to pose for a photo-op standing beside one of the stickers on the gas pump, so it's probably something that we should go ahead with as soon as possible.

Gasoline is explosive!! Fueling a vehicle is potentially dangerous. Not the time or place for "politically correct". More important to think of safety in this location. A poor place to post distracting political messages.

Isn't it about time that the potato is placed upon the table?
the potato is the thousands of liters of untreated raw sewage that is dumped into the otherwise pristine waters of Clayoquot sound EVERY SINGLE DAY. and somebody's concerned about climate change? yes there should be a warning sign on every toilet in tofino -" do you know where your poop goes? look out the window at the ocean. that's where it goes. it's changing the climate"
climate change is a stupid joke most likely intended for somebody here to wangle some sort of financial benefit( besides the persons conducting the climate change study) from a carbon tax scam.
it is one of the stupider waste of money's I've seen ranking right up there with putting dumb stickers on gas pumps.
is that so anybody getting gas will feel guilty about driving to tofino and back?
how about a sign at the entrance of tofino " warning stupid things ahead"

How about a sign that directs tourists to reconsider returning to Tofino unless it is by bicycle or electric car ? Also a sign that tells everyone to defecate in the leading environmental community of Ucluelet where they actually treat their sewage ?

tofino - Leading the way to protecting the environment - because shit doesn't matter.

Currently, the area on the nozzles at the gas pump is used to identify the product coming out of the nozzle......"Gasoline" or "Diesel". Nice to know what you're about to pump into your tank, eh? So we'll cover that up with a "Climate Change" sticker. Brilliant!! Who's going to compensate the motorist that ends up with a tank of the wrong type of fuel, wrecking their engine, and requiring a total draining and cleaning of their entire fuel system? Here's a better idea...... Make a nice big "Climate Change" sign (It can say whatever Councillor Blanchette likes), and nail it to the forehead of the Weeping Cedar Woman.

Yes I knew it... cedarwoman is weeping because all of us are using Clayoquot sound for a toilet.
soon we can call it twoilet sound......... the sound of cedar woman weeping.

Just like parking meters in this town, those stickers are going to get played with.

The earth is not warming... at all... record ice formations in the south, and snow in Egypt. The raw data sets *before* IPCC manipulation and extrapolation show a modest cooling trend. I guess that is why it is "climate change" now, to insulate against cynicism when they say "global warming", and eventually people realize that it actually isn't getting any warmer.

In 20 years time, they will release astonishing data that temperatures have not changed as a result of the measures that they have taken, and the crisis has been evaded. Only after massive carbon taxes and manufacturing fleeing the first world countries that participate in these "global warming" treaties.

Check Maurice Strong's record. He was scaring people in the 70s with global cooling, until he modified it in the 90s with El Nino coming. It gave him a couple of years of credibility

6:42 AM.... Do you also hold to the principle that the earth is flat? Hitler is still alive? Aliens live amongst us? Smoking hasn't really been proven to be harmful? Somehow, I'm just sure that you subscribe to The Weekly World News and vote Conservative.

A tourist town hundreds of kilometres from most of its visitors' homes - and thousands for many - wants to discourage sales of gasoline needed to drive there? Are they mad? As in bat-shit crazy? Ralph hits the nail on the head with a sledgehammer - Tofino depends on driving tourists. Can the phoney environmental hypocrisy.

3:54 you are the one to have drunk the global warming koolaid. I am not 6:42 you wrote to. The world is cooling. Check the geological history of this planet. Ask about what is happening on the heating cycle of our heat source, the sun.

You also have to ask if the secret invitation only movers and shakers of the world who attend the Bilderberg conference are crazy when they had a conference on global cooling. Only idiots believe in global warming. It sure is a good way to tax people and move money into other people's pockets like those who attend that Bilderberg conference.

as meaning is diluted further and further, wheather has become climate change.
it used to be just wheather that changed daily, often unexpectedly, and nobody thought much about it.
since the recent infantilization of reality by various nitwits in governments and elsewhere, one of the things that we must learn to fear is wheather.
the capitalization upon fear appears to be in accordance with the principles of eco-business.
once something can be turned into a something word to be feared then we have a marketable item.
the marketable item/word can be the economic generator of numerous studies, conferences, symposiums, etc. for the
in-crowd and for those of us who inevitably pay for these things, the nuisance of hypocrisy.
we cannot be a tourist destination resort municipality inviting the world to come visit while at the same time having a local government producing nonsensical warnings and labels designed to make anyone who drives a car bus or truck feel guilty.

You need gas, then you need gas.... A sticker is not going to make me change my mind on gassing up. No one I know wants to buy extra gas for fun. New drivers maybe, but really. I hope there's a study done before this is implemented. (Joke)

Anonymous said...

Buying extra gas? NOW that is something that should have a warning sticker. Once that pump clicks off if you ever do it yourself or allow a gas jockey to squeeze in a few extra pennies in, to 'round off the total', you are destroying your emissions control system by pumping liquid gas into the evaporative control system which is designed only for vapors. That will necessitate the removal and airing out of said control system or replacement of said control canister or alternatively getting about 20% less gas mileage out of your vehicle forever.

Anonymous said...

No! it's too late. the stickers have already been printed you can see for yourself on Facebook by Greg Blanchets post from today.
there is no need for the study. they know what's best and by Jove we'll pay for it in all those tourist dollars that those stickers are going to send to ucluelet.
once word gets out that uclulet treats their sewage properly..hoooboy.. tofino is not going to be the darling of the environmental tourism concept it used to be.
the dollars will go elsewhere.
isn't that the point of putting climate change stickers on some city counsellors foreheads?

"It fits with the Tofino brand". What a crock, forget your social engineering you fatuous dweeb. Why don't you solve some of the real problems that currently face the community.

This is the "Tofino Brand".... Crushingly high taxes for small town, brutally scant housing options for young people, a shrivelling community being usurped by tourism, it's traditional neighbourhoods sacrificed to vacation rental economics. Highest water and sewer rates in the province with no spare capacity to serve the escalating needs of the community, and on and on

This town is on a one way ticket to hell for a lot of people trying to live here. Stop the fantasy. Oh mighty enviro warrior, get off your noble steed and get real. Nero was said to have fiddled, Tofino just pisses into the wind.

Anonymous said...

Don't worry about climate change. By the time the water gets high enough to have any serious implications for Tofino, it will only be a small inconvenience for the tourists....Long before that actually happens Tofino will become so expensive that no one will be able to actually live here.

What I would like to do is put a sticker on all those District lap top computers. Every time a council member, or staffer, opens it up they are forced to read...."WARNING, irresponsible use of District authority and waste of public resources directly costs the taxpayers money, and is a known cause of Tofino's deteriorating socio- economic environment"

This conclusion is supported by a consensus of community members. Things are heating up.
What are you going to do about it to Save the Town!!!...We have reached the "tipping point"
