Washington State votes to Legalize Marijuana
UPDATE 8:43 p.m.
Washington voters have voted to legalize recreational use of marijuana.
Initiative 502 held a commanding lead in initial vote counts, with overwhelming support in King County, and the measure was passing in other urban Puget Sound counties Pierce, Spokane and other counties.
One ounce of marijuana will be legal as of Dec. 6, and the state will begin a year-long process of creating a closed, tightly regulated and heavily taxed market for recreational marijuana sales at state-licensed retail shops.
The state measure doesn't affect the federal ban on marijuana, creating a conflict that could potentially be resolved in court.
Many in BC are worried how this will affect tourism and about the potential loss of BC's largest cash crop.

Esowista Sewer Issues
Thanks to all that have called or written regarding the Esowista Sewer System.I can tell you that a search of the BC Courts showed that there is no pending litigation. It is also apparent that there are major problems with the sewer system. There has been a lot of activity around the system at Esowista,Mallard Lake and the Maltby Rd. lift station. From what I have been told and seen there is a problem getting the wastewater past the Mallard Lake Rd. junction and there have been problems with the pipe from Esowista being blocked.
Credible sources have stated that there are design flaws but this has yet to be confirmed. Some readers have asked when the District of Tofino is going to upgrade the Maltby Rd. lift station and when the sewer main between Maltby Rd and Lynn Rd is going to be twinned as is called for in the agreement with Esowista.
If you would like a copy of the agreement between the District of Tofino and Esowista/TFN just include your email address in a comment and I will forward it.These won't be published.Estimates for the twinning of the sewer line between Maltby Rd and Lynn Rd were about 1.3 million dollars with a contribution from Esowista of $353,760. A considerable undertaking.
I'm afraid with this subject there are more questions than answers but I will try to get more information. Please comment if you have any insight.
On another topic there is no word as to what was discussed at the Special Saturday In-Camera Meeting. Many readers have been asking if there are going to be changes with Council or staff but it is all being kept secret at this time.

Ucluelet resignation
An avid blog reader asked me to post this article from the Westerly. The Westerly has been doing a great job covering local politics as of late. I'm glad to see more reader participation on the blog. For a while comments were slow as the District of Tofino threatened to track down the IP addresses of commentors. There were over seven thousand individual page views during the Tsunami Advisory.Over a thousand different readers viewed the post on the Mayor's responsibilities. I posted the article because there was a lot of misinformation circulating as to what is expected of the Mayor. There are no residency requirements for anyone on Council except that they reside in BC.There is no requirement that anyone on Council be employed or be retired in their constituency. Readers will remember that in the last election there was a candidate from outside the District....this is perfectly legal and quite common in rural areas.......
