  8. I think they have to decide on the renewal of some employee contracts. Let's hope there are some changes.

  9. Maybe the Council will question the high rate of staff turnover ? Why there is no foreman ? Why have we gone through so many Deputy Clerks in the last 3 years ??

  15. I can pretty much say the meeting is due to the fact the mayor is working outside of Tofino 5 days a week, commutes to Vancouver, and is only around on weekends, if that. I think it's also to see if the current council still supports the mayor. Now there are no rules that prohibit this and the mayor is allowed to do so. But think if an emergency took place on a weekday and the mayor is in Vancouver. Is that the issue? I'd bet on it.

  16. "While there is so much about Tofino that works and is envied by other communities, I think most Tofitians will agree that there are some aspects of our civic governance and management that can be improved." quote from Perry Schmunk

It's been a year and no improvement

  17. Nobody was up in arms when the previous Mayor went to Arizona.....

  18. If there is an emergency, do people actually expect any mayor of any municipality to be the one leading and coordinating emergency responses? First off, I would trust the emergency response centre first. then the fire department, RCMp, paramedics, etc. they all have training and experience in such matters. the mayor does not get a primer in emergency response when he gets elected to the position. Furthermore. i think most of the onus is on the individual to be prepared, informed, and react accordingly. After the fact, I would like for the mayor to get connected with higher government institutions to give emerency funding for any reconstruction, contingency, etc. That is what I would expect him to do well. Do we really want to see schmunk with a bullhorn waiting for us at the community hall with some comedic levity?

I still haven't heard of any concrete example of how Schmunk's commitment to having economic stability in his life has adversely affected his civic service to this town.

Furthermore. For all the complainers. If there is a by-election, who will step up to be the pin cushion of this community? Who would you want to step up?

  19. No one is criticizing the pursuit of economic stability . It is the lack of communication that is a problem for council and staff. Furthermore if an elected official ignores their campaign platform the constituents have a right if not an obligation to complain. If the candidate had run on a platform of maintaining the status quo while exiting town other candidates would have entered the race.

  20. No one is judging the mayor for wanting economic stability in his life and for his family. That is not the issue. When he announced that he was leaving LBL for a job in Vancouver he said he was going to make it work. He has missed a month of council meetings, has not communicated with staff, he won't respond to other people's communication. We understand that he needs to have a job and take care of his family but what about the job he signed up for here? He gets paid $1600 a month to not show up to his meetings? How long will this go on for? He is a good guy and a good mayor but maybe he has bitten off more than he can chew.

  21. Re 3:51 pm That is the best & most accurate statement to date.

  22. "Nobody was up in arms when the previous mayor went to Arizona"..... Perhaps that was because we all felt just a wee bit safer knowing he was nowhere near Tofino.

  23. With the previous Mayor nobody cared. This time people had a genuine feeling of hope and optimism.

  24. 351: Great analogy.

As for not showing up to meetings; isn't this why Skype and such was battled over last year, so that meetings were more accessable?

And people, at the end, didn't care about the prior mayor; but PS had a good platform and genuinely seemed to care. However, much of what he said would happen hasn't. We have no idea if it is due to it not being possible, or him not doing it, or him not caring.

I feel like he has let us down bigtime; one of his biggest platforms was complete transparency. And whatever the reason for him not being at meetings; at least stand by your own words.

With him having this new job, I wouldn't be surprised if he were to leave soon, either of his own choice, the demands from Cactus Club, or being pushed out; either by the townspeople or others in the District.

I think a lot of what he originally stood for in the running was awesome; so little of that was achieved. Are there factors beyond his control? Beyond council's control?

The biggest issue is, we DON'T know... And that upsets people more than an answer generally.
