Time for a change. If council wants to constantly advocate for the FN fine…go work for them same with chamber and Tourism Tofino. But the tax funds heading to TFN is getting gross. Ask any local business owner if they need another tax for a special interest group? How about a tax without any accountability or representation. Socialism anyone? Our NDP council is as big a failure as our provincial and federal governments have proven to be. Elections can’t come fast enough.
As far as I know, our new sewage treatment plant cost a lot to build and a lot to operate, which includes hauling the solids away often. It's not a glamorous topic. However, if the truth be told the district of TOFINO taxpayer covers the cost of all of this nonsense so we don't have septic tanks or discharge raw sewage into the ocean. About 35 years ago, a movement arrived in Tofino, intending to convince anybody environmentally determined that they could ride on the coat tails of the first nations into the halls of government locally and provincially. The movement would all get high paying jobs to run things and the environment would be saved. Wonderful sounding idealism if you wanted to stop the world from burning up. Fast-forward to now. all this has happened except nobody asked those of us who work for a living doing normal things if we were willing to pay for this revolutionary new form of government. Socialism for the privileged and rugged idealism for those that aren't. Time for a change.
After reading the mayors comments recommending we all join the tribal Park Warriors, my opinion of the mayor has sunk to an even lower level than when he assents to lies being told to the public by staff. For anyone to recommend that businesses give in to being extorted in my view is immoral and criminal in most places - but not here.
For thousands of years “First Nations” fought with each other. Took hostages as slaves. Killed each other for food and land but mostly for power.
A long time ago a very old native person told me that one local band got guns first from the British and won a battle over another local band. To this day I understand there are different views on which band has rights to certain parts of Meares Island and Hot Springs.
So the only period with relative peace and security, the current time, must be evil. Imagine.
I think local First Nations should focus more on educating their youth. Develop skills that the world needs. That would lead to individual advancement and egalitarianism and self sufficiency. That would be terrible for the Chiefs.
The idea that all their problems stem from white European society just enables the current system to maintain control. We (Western societies) got rid of, for the most part, that system long ago to the benefit of the majority.
My ancestors were from some where else. A long time ago they fought all the time and fought everyone, again and again. But I don’t hold the events of the past, wars, cruelty, injustice, responsible for my current success or failure. That is in good measure my responsibility. But then the cultures are different. Right? Right!!
I agree with 7:23… It doesn't make sense to hang onto the past and believe that any minute it will be OK for one tribe to pull out knives in the co-op grocery store and annihilate another tribe.… Like the Tonquin. I would rather see everyone have clean drinking water, adequate health services and education, freedom from dangerous effects of drugs and alcohol and opportunities in the bigger world of BC. Glorifying warrior culture sends us back to where we all started. The Stone Age. Can we please move forward to something better?

If only Tofino Council and staff respected Tofino businesses and their constituents the way they respect the TFN .

Reconciliation is not an excuse for extortion.
