In Tofino, after the "war on tourism", how many vacant units sit today at SCBH, Eik, Tibbs? Built for tourists, established in waterfront commercial areas, but used instead for political pawns, to put on a show. Certainly not being used for housing, so what was the point?
Meanwhile, short term rentals abound in Tofino's residential neighbourhoods, because council lacks the balls to create and enforce a sensible zoning policy which separates commercial and residential areas of the village.
SCBH were never meant to be tourist accomodation, in fact the strata rules forbid it along with zoning rules. Ask the locals who originally bought there and were driven out of there by the constant short term rentals. The fact that it has been run as STR for so long is a complete joke. I know council tried to stop it but obviously failed - I just don't get it. I say this as someone who is in favour of STR where it is allowed by bylaw and has a caretaker suite with a local resident.
D.O.T. has done a complete about-face today issuing business licenses for STR at Eik landing. Tibbs is also re-opening. It was all bullshit political theatre, created by Dan and friends to make themselves look like heroes. Common sense prevailed when staff pointed out that there now wasn't enough revenue to pay their wages. Better get those license fees re-instated, eh?
Don't worry Dan, now that Trump has created a trade war you'll still be able to be the hero. Claim credit for the great upswing coming to Tofino this summer from Canadian stay at home's. Have staff draft a proposed response to the tariffs from a Tofino perspective. Or somethin'.
