Is Tofino the poster child for an expanding public sector ?
“The Business Council of B.C. says based on data in July’s Labour Force Survey, B.C. has added just 5,300 new private sector jobs since July 2022. At the same time, the province’s public sector payroll has grown by 63,000.”

Absolutely. There's so many of 'em that you can't shake a stick at 'em!
ReplyDeleteTo me, the most amusing part is when they justify all the expense by saying that it's the only way they can provide all the services that we need. My question is "who decided we needed all these services?" C'mon, wasn't the latest one hired to co-ordinate the work of all the other ones? Really? There's that many of 'em?
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation published a great article "Municipal government employees, The New Wealthy". Wages in the DOT office are increasing by leaps and bounds over similar positions in the private sector.
How bad is it? If you really want to know, check out this detailed investigation from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation:

As you read the report above, you'll notice that most of their research concerns major urban centers, most with several hundred thousand populations, to distribute this huge municipal tax burden across, perhaps making it less noticible, and more likely to continue.
DeleteIn Tofino, however, all of this newfound importance in municipal affairs is focused on the tax bills of only 2500 people, most of whom don't own property. 2500 to pay the same bills as (120,000)? in Nanaimo.
Why does the CAO in Tofino get paid the same rate as the CAO in Nanaimo? I can't imagine how the two could ever be considered even near equal.
The answer to questions like this..... is the reason that no one runs in local elections. The system is rigged, corrupt, geared to serve those that operate it, not the taxpayers. A seat on council is three years of fustration, delay, bureaucracy, excuses, lies, conflict and bafflement as the poor guy tries to remember why he ever got involved with any of this, or those people, in the first place.
.....it's not going to change
Civil service jobs are all about taking in everyone else’s dirty laundry for something to do.
ReplyDeleteThey are rarely producing wealth in terms of creating something of real value out of something.
Without wealth creation there is no money for everyone, including all those public service jobs.
Printing money to create government jobs cannot go on forever.
It will not end well for us.
When a government runs up debt there are two ways to get out of it. The government can promote business, create jobs and increase tax revenue or they can increase taxes for the public. Sadly, increasing the public sector does neither and just ends up costing the tax payer more because their taxes are used to pay the increase in public sector jobs. Canada is hiding behind their job numbers and they are mostly in the public sector. Dive into those numbers and you see why we are in trouble. Look at GDP per capita and we are sitting at number 22 in the world. Are you a tofino business owner? I ask you ...has the DOT done anything to help your business? Has the provincial government done anything to help your business? For me, the answer is no to both but my taxes ARE going up.

ReplyDelete"commonly cited barriers associated with over-regulation and complex permitting processes". isn't this a Tofino slow growth/no growth policy?
ReplyDelete10:34 Tofino doesn’t just slow business they actively try to put you out of business. Their crazy parking policies are just one example.
ReplyDeleteEvery year there are more and more off shore parking spaces needed and no solution to the issue to my knowledge is even being explored.
Yes. Tofino bureaucracy is out of control. Taxes here are ridiculous. but you get the government you deserve. Council seems unaccountable. Certainly not interested in municipal efficiency or accountability. Remember, come next election, make these issues, election issues, and hope somebody else runs.
