Why do we even have zoning? Single family residential is 30% commercial activity. VCR's and staff houses. Uses available to the owner occupant are utilized by out of town absentee owners. The requirement of zoning is now just a ticket you can buy for some amenity units, if you can wrangle it. It seems to serve no other purpose.
At the all candidates meeting, councillor Al says maybe "we went a little too far", in regard to the decisions of previous councils handing out VCR rights..... Ya think...good start....now do something about it.
Temporary use permits entitle the creation of slums.
I don't know why Tofino doesn't tax these VCR's more appropriately. Allow one unit at existing fees and taxes. Beyond that the second bed/unit is $5000-$10000 or whatever works. Beyond that the third bed/unit is $10,000? and up. Make it expensive enough people have to think about how far they want to go.
That might open up some units back into the long term rental use, taxed as per residential use
There really isn't much point to having bylaws at this juncture. They aren't enforced, some are unenforceable, if it gets really serious the district hires a private investigator instead of the bylaw person that's paid to enforce the bylaws to gather the evidence and pursue the matter in court because, apparently, the district can levy a fine for someone for a bylaw fraction but, other than sending them a naughty notice letter, Apparently the district cannot tack the fines on the tax bill or the utilities. So it's actually so troublesome to enforce the byelaws effectively that why bother? And if your neighbour complains Bylaw will tell them it's a civil matter that you'll have to settle in court outside of the districts purview. wait. We pay taxes to include Bylaw enforcement but if we actually need to have the bylaws enforced, individuals must hire a lawyer and take the offending citizen/business to Court. So taxpayers are punished financially if they should be so dumb as to require a bylaw to be enforced is my understanding. Perhaps it occurs to others that the system is broken here. The district solution is to hire more people to do things that at times seem imaginary that have been dreamed up by people who might be stoned. Or on a coffee and donut break.

10:05 there is no where to go in BC. Progressives have turned every community into a cesspool. Vancouver is spending more on their social safety programs than they are on universal health care. $267,000,000 spent on 817 units of housing with a $3,100 per month operation fee per room. The VDP report suggests it costs $7200 per resident to provide the program. Every community has a different story with a similar outcome. Until we get rid of leaders like Gameshow Gord Johns, who everyday want to spin the wheel of taxpayers fortune, the whole province is doomed.
Gameshow Gord....I like it. His mailouts have so little depth. Wheel of fortune is too sophisticated though. You actually solve a puzzle. Gords policy mailouts are more like Hollywood Squares with cream pie throwing or Jethro of the Beverly Hillbillies cleaning out the Cement Pond.
Game Show Gord....I like it. But the Wheel of Fortune is a little too sophisticated. The participants actually have to solve puzzles. I am more reminded of a pie throwing show like Hollywood Squares, or Gord's efforts could be likened to Jethro of the Beverly Hillbillies trying to clean out the Cement Pond.
District policies of increasing taxes, handing out money, increasing their own paycheques, hiring more staff and more staff, well delivery less and less is in keeping with our national political behaviour it seems. Totally disregarding the effect of those financial decisions upon the citizens who live here and don't have the ability to pay themselves more to do less or anything else. It is hard to guess the solution to this situation other than someone please come in and clean house. It might happen with the federal election but it certainly isn't going to happen in our next district election unless someone cleans house that's sent by the provincial premiere allegedly David Eby. His view that affordable housing is hamstrung and made unaffordable by municipal governments impenetrable bureaucracy is bang on. Let the cleanup begin!
Ineptocracy (in-ep-toc'-ra-cy)- a system of government where the least capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing, and where members of society least likely to sustain themselves or succeed, are rewarded with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of a diminishing number of producers.
Tofino will have a tough time trying to put the genie back in the bottle. Existing bylaws re: short term rentals, obviously don't work. We are losing housing and impacting our residential neighbourhoods. Things are out of control. Council is caught between past mistakes that restrict current action and the only alternative they can see....do nothing. Either way it looks bad and they have in effect abandoned ship. Everyone for themselves I guess.
Massive abandonment of public responsibility. We don't have the kind of council makeup that will sort this out. Too timid. No visionaries. More inclined to tinker than any dramatic change of course. Cowardly self preservation. Then there is staff. Staff is always for the status quo, except when it comes to staffing and remuneration and their own self interest.
