Here's last year's version of the story https://www.westerlynews.ca/news/municipal-salaries-in-tofino-and-ucluelet/

While your business was shut down, and others were out of work, DOT was increasing staff levels and handing out pay raises. We're all in this together. Yah right.

Government continues to grow fat. Wouldn't be so bad if they actually solved some problems. Problems like water supply, sewage treatment, downtown parking, roads and traffic management, approving some fee simple housing options. The more we pay the less we get. I guess we aren't paying enough. Don't worry that will all be rectified by next years increases.

Agreed that the year over year increases seem outrageous, as do the number of staff at this level in such a small town. But I guess that's what negotiated for union contracts?

Most of those listed salaries are not unionized positions. It is just staff recommending pay rises for each other and Council rolling over. Sorry. I think it unfair to say Council rolled over. If anything they fully approved.

Yeah, it's too much. Any reasonable person can see that. Municipal employees have come to be a new "upper middle class" of highly paid public employees. Not only in Tofino, but all across Canada, as Provincial and Federal governments shed themselves of responsibilities and shift the burden to municipalities, levels of municipal involvement and expense have risen dramatically. Hence, levels of compensation for the employees who do the work required by this increased participation rise also. But you can't get mad at the staff, they're only human. If someone was stupid enough to pay me that kind of outrageous wages, I'd certainly take the money too. And you also should consider that these people have to live in Tofino, and that sure ain't cheap.

To 3:16 You shoulda coulda stopped after your first two sentences. It is people struggling to live in Tofino that are paying these folks at town hall. And most of those people struggling to live on Tofino are making half or less. You would expect folks a town hall to have a different set of issues in mind. They are living in a different reality than the vast majority of the permanent residents.

But we keep electing councilors who think "pronouns" and such are important issues. We are toast.
