Her comments are misleading. Of course the "renters" would be on board with it. It's not their taxes that will go up at all, they'll just get a rink to use, and the owner of the home they're renting will foot the bill. A fair question would have been, "As a renter, would you be ok with paying $50/month higher rent to have a rink?" And I also notice most of the First Nations are in favour of the rink as well. Perhaps I am wrong (and please correct me if I'm mistaken, as I mean no disrepsect), but would the band's property taxes also go up? I was under the impression that they didn't pay property taxes. What exactly would be the First Nations financial contributions to the Multiplex? The First Nation vote, assuming they have no financial obligation after voting in favour of a rink, therefore, would be considered the same as the "renter's" vote. (Again, I mean no disrespect, so please correct me if I am wrong)
Yep, The best way to have a pool is to have a rink first. Makes perfect sense. I guess. Same as: The best way to have a sewage disposal facility is to have a sh#thole community first. Well, we're certainly on track to meet that goal.
It's those "renters" that live here from May 'til October, and then take off for six months elsewhere, that form the "true" nucleus of the community. What a crock! Does she really believe that garbage? Amazing to think that the people who'll end up paying for this fiasco (the property owners) would actually object to seeing their already sky-high taxes rise yet again to pay for it. How about this idea: All you folks that want this facility get out there, volunteer and fund raise and come up with the cash to build and maintain it. That's how other small communities in the country get these sort of things. If you think it's such a great idea, then pony up, do some work, act like an actual community working together, and get it for yourselves, instead of expecting someone else to provide it for you...... and DON'T hire someone like Gord Johns to "look after" it for you. You don't have that kind of money to waste. Do it yourselves!
The Multiplex Society is delusional. No matter what anyone days they blindly support the cause. The should consider the best interests of Tofino before their own self interest. If you had a referendum on free beer it would pass. Who wouldn’t want free beer at Tofino’s expense ?
I like snowboarding. I want my kids to be pro snowboarders. I don’t want to move or drive to Mt Washington or Whistler. I suggest that we form a Snowboarding Hill Association. All we need is a few snow machines and a downhill slope. People will flock to the west coast to go snowboarding . In the off season downhill mountain bikers will use the hill. Nobody will want to surf or go fishing if they can go snowboarding. The children of the west coast will go astray if they can’t go snowboarding at home. No expensive building needed , just a few snow machines. Most pensioners love snowboarding but are too frail to travel to Mt. Washington. After a life of hard work pensioners should be able to relax and go snowboarding. I think most people will support a referendum to build a snowboarding hill first and then maybe a ski hill and some half pipes. All at a fraction of the cost of a multiplex. The first step to getting the Olympics in the area is to get a snowboard hill.
I am for the snowboard hill! makes sense. Sutton pass resort here we come! It is quite a large assumption to say that majority of the homeowners do not live locally. I get it that nowadays, with affordability issues, that much of a population is made up of renters. But to denigrate the opinions of the homeowners on a backhanded assumption is ridiculous. WHat this community needs more than anything is public pools over ice rinks in the context of us being surrounded by water and all. Why does an ice rink have to come before a pool. Nonetheless, I disagree with the whole project in general considering the price and upkeep of said project especially in the context of how many people will use it. That is the cost use projection analysis I want to see. How many people is the multiplex society assuming will be actually using this facility. I would guess that many tourists are not coming to the westcoast to go sit in an indoor facility that is available anywhere else. SO the users would mostly have to be local. Now how many people will actually use this thing vs. how much will it cost to subsidize the costs per person? We do not have a large permanent population out here that would necessitate such a large project. This would be a highly subsidized facility for years to come that I will assume will not get as much use as is assumed. If it has to be built, why not a stripped down modest pool facility at Ukee and tofino,. I also am under the impression that the location of the facility will reduce convenient walk up use. Many will not go if they have to hitch or find a ride out there. they will find other things to do closer to home. What is next? a free shuttle to the facility from each community? That costs as well. White elephant.
It is quite clear the majority are against this proposal. It is interesting though how some will try manipulate who is and who isn't the community, or should I say the "real" community. High school is over kids. Your cliques and in groups won't cut it.
Forget the rinks ,pools and snowboard ideas. Council should zone for a Red Light District. It would create local employment, diversify the local economy and tourism would really boom.
I'm not sure that 10:19AM is correct that the majority are against it...... Seems more like those that don't have to pay for it are eagerly in favor of it, while those that'll get stuck with the bill for it are more prone to sober second thought on the matter. Go figure, eh.
Support, or non-support, for the multiplex, seems confusing. The entire question is confusing. I suspect that it was made confusing, on purpose, in order to appear to suit certain political agendas. Exactly what is it I'm expected to be against or in favor of? The location? The type of facility? The schedule of construction? The design of the facility? The eventual day to day operation and expense of the complex? Whether or not it gets built at all? Who gets a vote on the decisions? ..... and the BIG question: Where's the $$$ gonna come from? Now Gord Johns thinks that all the questions have been decided. Of course he does, he got the outcome he wanted at the referendum. Others feel differently. No wonder! The referendum question was loaded, at best, toward delivering the desired result. (Like: Do you still beat your wife?) How can such a complex topic properly, and justly, be decided upon based on a one word answer to a single question? Heads, you win, tails, you lose?
We are such a privileged society... not only do we get to live a fairly low crime area, have schools, a hospital .... we want and want.
The fact is we flush our shit into the ocean and have an unreliable drinking water system. We have a very low population to support paying for the first 2 items but what item 15 (ice rink) and item 20 (swimming pool). Honestly is this a non-starter or is the collective thought process of the Tofino masses so low all they can think about is their continual wants.
We elect low functioning council members, hire subpar staff and expect our wants to be come true. We are truly fucked!
I want only certain people to be able to vote and make decisions here but the majority of you are really too stupid. Sorry had to say it !
Only in TofiNO, If Sunshine was a taxed commodity, they'd for sure say NO to the sun, because it rains here, we're fine with only rain! And than, they would explain to you that the Sun belongs to where the sun is from! Than they would instagram the rain and jump on a plane to Hawaii for a plastic symposium. A secret district study concluded that social media IS the number 1 activity in Tofi No No No.

ReplyDeletePoll results for Tofino. 60% no #30% yes. Most people are against it. This is after all the Tofino News.
ReplyDeleteFake news ! The multiplex has the greatest support ever.
