  1. Why not just ban locals and long term rentals? Tofino is just a progressive theme park now anyway. Instead of elected officials it could be run by the CAO of the Clinton Botanical Foundation.

  2. The trouble all started when the road got paved.

  3. look, in order for people who come to tofino to live the lifestyle that doesn't involve too much work at a job, they must find a place to rent and then air B&B every square inch of the place to make enough money to be able to afford to live here. and enough money left over at the end of October to get the hell outta here leaving the landlord with a broken lease and a mess.
it's a growth industry don't you naysayers understand? where else can you screw around for three months, make $10,000 profit with no risk and no commitment, then leave.
in other towns the poor air B&B operators have to rely on the air B&B income to be able to support their families and pay for their mortgages. it's a job don't you see? people generating their own employment so they're not a drain on the economy.
the neighbours and the property owners are just jealous that they're not smart enough to do the same thing.

  4. All vacation rentals should be required to get specific commercial zoning for that use, and be licensed for commercial purposes. Through rezoning you will restore a neighbourhoods/communities say in what happens. Vacation rental needs to come through the front door, not slip in through the back door. Like every other regulated use of property

  5. Once upon a time I and my family lived in a normal house in a subdivision in tofino.
a couple bought the house next door and decided to be a bed-and-breakfast.
no one asked me what I thought or if this was going to be an impact on my life style or a bother or a pain in the butt.
later, when I tried to figure out why the neighbours acted so crazily, it was revealed to me that they had borrowed $125,000 from beneficial finance at a high interest rate in order to fix the place up so it could be a B&B operation.
in the course of the next few years the legal concept of "quiet enjoyment" of one's personal residence became nonexistence due to the unending noise and intrusions from the neighbouring property.
then it became a vacation rental with the owners living somewhere else.
the end came one evening when we had a birthday party in the summer outside with no alcohol and no music but with party games and laughing and talking. at about 10 o'clock the RCMP showed up and ordered us to disperse because of a noise complaint from the B&B guests next door who were two families from New York City feeling terrified of what might happen next.
we offered to go inside to cut the cake and sing happy birthday but the policeman ordered us to cease and desist and all go home.
as some of you might understand this was a direct insult to Canadians and anybody that just might want to live a normal life in a place where greed has overtaken family values.
really, expecting to live a normal family life based on zoning and municipal bylaws in tofino is ludicrous.
we, the people who have lived here and contributed to the community for many many years, are the enemies, the spoilsport's, the wet blankets, curmudgeon's, and stupid people.
we moved away to Port Alberni.

  6. Sadly our memories are short, come election time these same people will be elected again. No one will stand up for each other and the morally corrupt DOT will continue the same song and dance.....
