If you live offshore you can get a free permit to park as long as you want right by the wharf or post office(regardless of race, creed, colour, religon or sexual orientation). It you are a citizen of Tofino you will be punished for parking in your own town. Kudos to whoever created this poster.
Surprised not to see more about our upcoming council meeting. Page 96 requests council to go after everyone who runs a successful B&B. B&B's must be secondary to the residence.... hmmm, there are the top 10 places on TripAdvisor gone! We all know how the DOT applies the bylaws fairly... ha ha ha....
ReplyDeleteDOT staff are going to waste so much money on lawyers ($400/hour), hiring more staff and creating more bad energy here in Tofino. It sure would be great to see them divert that energy towards social housing on the lot owned by the district. Just learned from Gord Johns that the district property was surveyed and ready to go but John Fraser and company nuked the idea.
We need a council that is in tune with the times, please do us all a favour and retire... please
Bylaws fairly?
ReplyDeleteBusinesses in Tofino have sign bylaws and no sandwich board rules but the public market has signs up in our public park and has multiple sandwich boards on the streets. It costs lots to put a sign up in this town yet the Public Market Society gets to do it for free?
Yep definitely fair, AND then the money spent there leaves town with all the out of town vendors the market has.
Just park in the middle of the street and put your 4 way flashers on.
ReplyDeleteIsn't parking your car a basic human right? How can they limit that right to only two hours?
ReplyDeleteIf you get a parking ticket, change your behavior. Parking tickets for illegally parked cars exist in many cities. I don't think this concert of enforcement is new, although maybe a touch new to Tofino.
Parking permits for residents exist in many cities.

ReplyDeleteThis Saturday 3rd street was closed for the Market.
Appeared to be mostly a "Tofino Radio" promo to sell their commercial merchandise… WTF
Make it, Bake it, Grow it …. it’s more like keeping your select friends nose in the through… disgusting !!
*A local with homemade Art is kept on a "market vendor waiting list" but a Commercial Venture like this can do business in the middle of the street (with big Banner Signs) ... encouraged by our local government.
How corrupt is this F’ing town ? (see the Josie Osborne FB page)
It would it seems be too simple to establish rules like I have heard called for, replicating the Salt Spring market.
ReplyDeleteI don't go and I tell visitors not to go as it is not all handmade or even made in Tofino.
im not into facebook.
ReplyDeleteDuncan; can you take some photos of the mayors page with your iPad and post them here ?
I think council has failed to plan for the increasing need for parking. Visitation is up, employment is up. and people need places to park.
ReplyDeleteI understand there are now approx. 180 offshore parking permits that are filling up our downtown streets etc.
Also, some on council might be biased against the automobile, and would view cars as "bad". Hundreds of thousands have been spent improving the pedestrian and bike experience of downtown Tofino and reworking existing parking, while nothing has been spent creating new parking, ignoring the needs of car drivers. The fact that virtually everyone arrives here by car seems to have escaped their attention. Why can't some of that tourist bed tax money be spent on creating parking. WE and the tourists surely need it.
Agreed 10;49, and why don't they use some "bed tax money" for boat and trailer and motor home parking. Tourists need places to park these things, get them out of the downtown.
ReplyDeleteThere should be at least $800.000 in the "Parking in Lieu" fund, why aren't they creating parking spots ?
ReplyDeleteThey did.
ReplyDeleteMini parking spot by the liquor store.
As if that will solve the problem....LOL
Great comment by 9:54AM...... District has been "selling" this non-existing parking for years (actually, isn't this a type of fraud, selling something that doesn't exist, and never will?) Or should one look at it as blackmail or extortion....(you either pay us for this non-existing parking or you don't get your development permit or business license).? Either way, it's perhaps legal, but far, far from any version of ethical or honest. One thing for sure, you can bet that the "parking-in-lieu" fund doesn't even exist......that cash has been "diverted" to other places, and is long, long gone.
ReplyDeleteThe "bed tax money" is used to create flower gardens where there once used to be parking spaces, and to "redesign" the remaining parking, so that only three cars can park in an area that once held five. That's because the idiots are running the asylum.
ReplyDeleteGreat comments as well, 12.08. Just like the DCC bylaw. Collect money for non existing projects.(Kennedy Lake water). It surely IS a fraud, and a violation of Provincial Regulation. Tofino will not get it till someone has the sack to take them to court, and then to the cleaners. Seems like it is the only way to get fairness in this regressive, autocratic burg.
ReplyDelete"That ain't workin" "Money for nothin".
Just keep "movin them refrigerators".
I am a non-Canadian who owns property in Tofino. I manage to visit Tofino only 2 or 3 times a year. It is ridiculous for Tofino residents who live and work here year round to have to pay for parking. It seems simple enough that residents can be issued a sticker for their cars identifying their cars as belonging to Tofino residents and allowing them free parking.
ReplyDeleteTourists and we out of towners can pay if we must, but locals should not have to.
