Watermetergate Scandal Analysis

For some reason in July of 2011 the District of Tofino estimated the water bill for Pacific Sands rather than reading the meter. On January 19,2012 the water meter was changed. This would indicate that somebody knew there was a problem.Apparently nobody bothered to check if the new meter was working correctly as the water bill for July to September of 2012 was only $3630.97 but after the water meter was changed again on April 1 2014 the billing was significantly higher. As a matter of fact it rose to $32,166.50 for the period of July-September 2014.So somebody on staff knew of the problem a long time before the Watermetergate scandal became public.Let's hope somebody is held accountable.Again this is only one example from one resort;the problem is much more widespread. Are the new meters accurate ?? Who knows ?? I would advise anyone with larger water consumption to install their own accurate meters so they can check the District's numbers.

  4. Thanks Ralph for yet another exposé of what seems to be incompetence, dereliction of duty, sloppy accounting, devious behaviour, and covering it all up by calling it -Good Job!. you deserve a raise or two.
the very same culprits have been entrusted to craft a budget which includes tax increases.
unless all of us choose to bury our heads in the sand we are Being made fools of.
if anybody wonders why I don't trust government this is a pretty good reason.

  6. Mayor and Council are awaiting a staff report on the Watermetergate scandal. They really can't say too much until that report is in.I would have preferred to see someone not on staff investigating this scandal.

  7. Bob Long,Braiden Smith,Don McKinnon....all victims of this blog's witch hunt. All great employees hounded out of town. Now there is the redneck cry for accountability when just a bit of water is spilled and taxes go up a bit.

  8. In thinking about this it appears that a great deal of money was thrown away through the actions and non-actions of a few players.
we can call that water money.
the water money would have normally paid down the debt incurred to build the water treatment plant at sharp road as well as ongoing expenses.
and we assume that property tax money pays for all that other stuff that's in a budget.
then we have the tourist tax money that's kind of like silly money.
so the reason the taxes are going up is that we don't have enough water money, nor property tax money, nor tourist tax money.
if the same principles that apply to the water money are used to operate the property tax money and the tourist tax money I personally would be carefully examining how tax money is spent here.
tax money is not free money for those of you in charge of giving it away. most of us work for our money and resent it being an obligation to pay in order that it can be pissed away like summer wages by people who get paid to do that.
