Despite the ban on short-term rentals bringing some units onto the market over the past couple months, the average cost of rent continues to rise. Could it be that this law had nothing to do with housing but more to do with protecting hotel profits? How much money did the BC Hotel Association give to the NDP to make all their recommendations into law? https://www.victoriabuzz.com/2024/06/rental-woes-rent-in-victoria-has-risen-for-both-one-and-two-bedroom-units/
Not going to argue rents going up for the poor renter to pay but the landlord has to cover his costs and it costs way more to maintain a place now than it did just a short while ago. Blame needs to be placed where it belongs. It isn’t the landlords that are the problem as they are just doing what they have to do to run their business. The problem is whacko socialist governments with their insanely useless carbon taxes and taxation of everything else as well.
The true impact will be felt more when it comes into full effect this fall. It has already and will continue to have a positive impact on housing availability as it was intended. A tough pill for some but very necessary for Tofino and many other places in BC. Hopefully more of those illegal suites will be converted, I know of a few that already have been and are housing locals. It's not a perfect tool but it's starting to work and it's a good thing for many who desperately need it.

When the provincial VR police come to Tofino they will have their hands full . Many operators have extra suites they rent out short term .

@8:37am their first concern will be trying to find a place to stay ;)
