Parksville VR Story

  1. The folks in Parksville will have the same problem as places like the Tibbs will have, short term renting accommodations that could be used as long term rental. As soon as exemptions are carved out the so called benefits of the new legislation are eliminated.
What is going to happen if you as an owner fail to rent the unit out long term and just keep it vacant?
Elsewhere in the country the fines for doing that can be $10,000 a year.

  2. Once upon a time, in Canada, you used to be able to work hard, get ahead, and maybe one day reward yourself with things like a summer cottage at the lake or out by the beach. No longer. Today, you MUST rent out your cottage to Trudeau's new immigrants to live in or you'll be punished.
The housing crisis is your fault, for being greedy, not the fault of multiple levels of government.

  3. 12:51...that country is leaving the station..."Work hard so we can tax you more"...Leave the Village idiot in charge Gord Johns our "Man/They" in Ottawa.

  4. Gord only comments on the low hanging fruit. He sidesteps any question that might jeopardize his access to the free buffets in the HOC and the photo ops for his scrap book.

  6. We, the residents of Tofino, are being divided. I have seen this happen a few times in my 20 plus years of living here full time and nothing good has ever happened from it. The division is usually fuelled from some politician who typically disappears in a couple years. There are always unintended consequences that come out years later. The politicians got us into this mess in the first place. Can we honestly think they can get us out of it with more rules?

  7. Bang on 224. Enforce the rules that you have before you hire more people and make more rules. It's been a vicious cycle for the last 20 years at least. If there needs to be a rule for owner operator only for a VR so be it.

  8. Think about this. Everyone drives an automobile, despite the fact that we all know that this contributes to global warming. Suddenly, next week, the government announces that all motor vehicles must be removed from the highways effective May 2024. All of them. Brand new law!

But you just spent $60K on a new vehicle, it's licensed, insured, but sorry, you'll have to drop it off at the landfill, the brand new law has been changed. You no longer "fit in". It's been decided that protection of the environment trumps any right you may have ever had to drive your car.

Likewise anyone operating an STR will be shut down, put out of business. Doesn't matter that you might have been operating legally for a over two decades, following the rules and paying your taxes, it's been decided that supply of long term rentals trumps all. You no longer "fit in". Doesn't matter that you've invested hundreds of thousands in your rental. Brand new law!

Ridiculous? What are you going to do if/when the government announces, suddenly without prior notice, that ALL outboard motors are now banned from any waters of the province, in order to protect the marine environment. Sorry, you'll just have to accept the loss, maybe plant some flowers in your boat and use it for a lawn ornament. Brand new law!

All levels of government have failed, for decades, to anticipate and deal effectively with Canada's housing crises. Now it's been decided that an attack on a certain segment of society (STR's) is an acceptable solution to a social problem.
    Today, it's your vacation rental.
What are you going to do next time? When it's your car? Your boat? Your right to fly on an aircraft? (there's no doubt about the environmental damage done by the travel industry, so lets pass a brand new law restricting travel.)
Before you rejoice over what the government is doing maybe you'd better stop and think about who the government actually is. It's made up of overpaid people like Josie and Gord. Do we really want to give this kind of power and control to these people? What are they going to dream up next?
Lets cut the electricity down to maybe 12 hours per day, save the environment.(I admit that's far fetched). Probably not, but they could. And if they ever thought another brand new law would increase their chances for re-election, or provide them some advantage or reward, they will. And they've clearly demonstrated that they're not very good at anticipating the results of what they do.

Like 2:24PM said, these parasites are only here for a couple terms and then we the people are left with the results of their mismanagement for years afterwards.

  10. The new legislation does nothing to shut down most STRs . It simply means that the rich elite won’t be able to run multiple STRs.
It will be much better for the community. If STRs are allowed to expand as we’ve seen , what little community we have left will be gone.

  11. ....from Vancouver Sun
"As the B.C. NDP prepare to pass a raft of housing-related bills this week, mystery continues to surround how the party arrived at certain economic modelling projections being used to support the legislation.

One data analyst who served as a consultant to the province on the modelling told Postmedia that he and his colleagues were asked to sign non-disclosure agreements, which would seem to lend credence to Opposition claims of a lack of transparency ahead of the bills going to a vote."

I don't know if the legislation is good or bad or somewhere in between. But I know that I have no faith in any level of government. I don't trust them. I don't believe much of what they say. I believe they're all self serving and speak with forked tongue.

    Of course, I'm wrong.
That's why they're operating in secret, behind closed doors, with non disclosure agreements.
