  1. OMG This is hard to believe. Am I reading this wrong? I am reading pages 6-9. It looks to me like not only did the THC see the possibility of private development as a "risk" to it's own success. (If the risk exists why are they even spending all this money, let the private sector do the job) They moved to curb rezoning and water to the private sector to ensure their access to water and their own success. And they thought that was OK to do so. They sought legal advice on how to manoeuvre through the issue. While for years, telling the public the THC needed to act because of the failures of the private sector. I kid you not. Read it for yourself.

I hope someone has the balls and resources to sue them. Come election time there may be more need of palliative care for some sitting council members.

  3. except all spare water and much more has been allocated to the new campground by now...but, but, the water was supposed to be for the sharp road not affordable rental units...awwww the consultants decided the thc was in the way of the campground getting open...sorry affordable housing you can suck eggs and hemorrage money for the next 5 years or longer..damn consultants

  4. It is sad to read what I call weasel words in those documents. I guess that is all you get when it is weasels guarding the hen house.

  5. I see from the minutes of the latest council meeting. another $65,000 lifted from the Districts funds, gained through sale of a donated Sea Otter unit to go to the THC. And now they are selling the Gateway unit that they got for nothing from the developer. The saga continues of emptying the public treasure chest to abet the THC. and ultimately Catalyst and the consltants

Meanwhile the town slumbers on. Ignorant and unconcerned. Is it past hope that people will wake up or maybe they don't care? If this is the new Tofino it does not speak well for the future.

  6. 10:10 you are onto something. Old Tofino was a terrible place, so they say. racist rednecks and frontier drinking, but as I understand it they knew it was their town. They had a sense of belonging and ownership sadly missing today. "If I am making a buck who cares what goes on at city hall" seems in full force now. You get the governments you deserve I guess.

  7. You can call it budgeting if you want but it's plain and simple robbery by some sort of conversion scheme. It doesn't seem like anybody and I mean anybody on the THC knows how to do anything real. Like building or clearing land or installing services and paying for it. Nobody... even the hired consultants don't know but pretend they do and turn out more papers and designs. This process is disgraceful for how much taxpayers money is being funnelled into peoples pockets by the simple sleight-of-hand maneuver called a budget.

  8. Wouldn't it have been easier to tell a developer, Ok, we will eliminate all your development fees etc, you get exclusive access to water, so no competition, and we give you free land and it's Ok to screw the salmon.
I am sure a real developer would say "----Yes, just tell me what you want" and you would have had the housing ten years ago
Instead the geniuses at City Hall spend millions and then offer the same deal, and we are still waiting.

The DOT decides to do both and no results. Staggering stupidity

  9. staggering stupidity....hire an expensive architect to design a 12 unit apartment. look online for plans you idiots. there's lots that have been built..if it wasn't for the DOT wanting a photo op in front of a grandiose pied a terre we could have a fine building much cheaper....
but we don't even need a sharp road building. build on DL 114 first.

  10. No one seems to care about anything especially the THC handing out thousands and thousands of your taxpayer dollars to their cheek and Jowl consultants. Ignoring what is of some concern for conflict of interests, collusion, and downright corruption.
However if you had a business on fourth Street with a number of employees who you trusted but eventually found that one of them routinely hired a courier company owned by a friend of theirs to deliver envelopes and parcels from your fourth Street business to the post office....... You would be concerned and mad that you were being robbed and would most likely fire that employee right away.
Much the same way that the THC Hands money out.

  11. now that anything has been stalled off long enough for the new campground to open for only self sufficient motorhomes and the money for affordable housing is successfully being bled away there is no need for worker housing.
if you want to house workers buy a motorhome, put it at the campground and voila! seasonal staff accom. awesome.

  12. All this gnashing of teeth over housing.
Here is a crazy suggestion. Why hasn't council put their money into the water system? Old sleepy uncle Bob, the CAO, has known since his hiring that work could be done to significantly increase capacity at the reservoir for the sharp road pump house. Every council for the last 40 years has known that water supply was the issue. And most made some progress. But, it is always a next year thing . Now they are saying next year. Should have been done years ago.

Tofino's answer is a rationing system, great, that does not allow the council to support any development, great. And then they complain about housing shortages. Give your head a shake. Stick to the basics of Municipal Government like water supply. Let the private sector do more housing. All that money wasted on committees, consultants and advisors, And nobody sees the forest for the trees. Why give good advise when bad advise makes you more money?

And councillors, I guess water supply is just too boring. No glory in that, when there is diversity, inclusion, global warming and plastic straws to be championed. Maybe, if little Greta pouts enough, she can conjure up some water for us? You want to do housing and you don't have enough water to fill a bucket. And if the Westerley can be relied upon, when regional players wanted to discuss Kennedy Lake as a regional water supply the Mayor chose not to participate. Too busy working on busing I guess.

They need a kick in the pants. Why get involved in algebra when you can't do basic arithmetic. Go back to grade two, till you get it right.
Sorry, I forgot, everyone seems to get a pass for participation these days, council and staff included.

  13. water is mystery work plain and simple. Turn the tap on it comes out. Flush the toilet away it goes. It's most likely that no one on Council understands water especially not our water.. It just is. They could make the reservoir 10 times bigger but it doesn't make water get here any faster or more of it. Big riddle.... Change the subject quick!

  14. Subject is too complicated. You want me to read documents? Give me psych 101 or why can't we go back to bashing VR's. Now that was fun.
