Mixed messaging as Tofino’s mayor urges tourists to stay away. Tofino’s beaches have remained open throughout the pandemic. Restaurants and resorts are opening up. Pacific Rim park opening early next month. My informal survey showed most Tofino businesses scrambling to open with safeguards in place. Plexiglass is in high demand.
Pacific Rim National Park As of June 4, 2020
Long Beach Unit
The following parking areas and nearby washrooms/pit toilets are open for day use in the Long Beach Unit (please observe directional signage to ensure physical distance measures):- Long Beach North
- Long Beach South
- Wickaninnish Beach (Kwisitis Visitor Centre parking lot and beach access trail will remain closed)
- Rainforest Trail A and B
- Shorepine Bog Trail
Yesterday Tonquin beach was full of people, yet the washrooms and garbage containers are still locked up. There's full dogshit bags all along the trail, human excrement with napkins and tissues at places all along the trail. It's filthy, it's gross.
ReplyDeleteEither the trail and beach should be open, and properly serviced, or it should be closed.
From Josie we get a mixed message only designed to not hurt any feelings, and protect her voter bloc. Not a leader, just a people pleaser. And since we don't have a credible leadership, businesses are going ahead with re-opening on their own. Josie has lost all credibility.
But, you know, those businesses are actually doing a pretty good job of it. Without needing the "services" of the staff in the District Office @ 100K per year, each.
Perhaps the staff of "The Emergency Operations Center" would be better used to go clean up the dogshit on the Tonquin trail. Maybe "The Mayor's Task Force" could help them.
As a resort owner, I find the messaging from the Mayor a complete travesty.
ReplyDeleteThere has been little communication with business owners, no plan, no support, and now businesses are left to figure it out on our own.
In tough times we need strong leadership. This mayor and council have proven they are anything but.
Congratulations to those businesses who figured out ways to open and operate safely and responsibly.
Resorts will open June 1st. And we will do so in a safe and responsible manner! Private businesses are the real leaders here, and I salute you!
Don’t you think everybody is doing what Dr. Bonnie and our Premier says to do as far as I am concerned they are our leaders not our council.
ReplyDeleteIt is no surprise that the Mayor has shown no leadership with regard to our town's industry, tourism. There is no question as to her true thoughts, several weeks ago she was advocating "reinventing Tofino with less reliance on tourism!" What a bunch of nonsense. Instead of focusing on trying to help the industry and their employees to struggle back on their feet, her whole energy is now given to positioning herself to become the next NDP MLA, by playing to her base, what a disappointment. She has now become irrelevant, the business community is now ignoring her and getting things done, with-out any help from her or council.
ReplyDeleteThe mayor is insensitive to the real needs of the community to be able to earn a living here and to not be taxed out of existence.
ReplyDeleteShe needs to forget her obvious political aspirations and properly serve the community.
The Peter principle is in full force with our current mayor.
The best thing she could do would be step down and get out of the way.
