This is great news. Now that people have invested millions in tourism we are going to go back to logging and fishing . In those days there were only two district staff in the office.
If we look at history and try and learn we will realize that politicians are the wrong people to be making these decisions. https://news.yahoo.com/san-francisco-paid-price-lifting-121949085.html The politicians are shooting and aiming later.
I don't think anyone voted these people in to do this job.
And for those who weren't there, the Clayoquot Sustainable Development Process that ushered in land use changes was a large undertaking. Provincially sanction with multi-sectoral participation Tofino had it,s own committee with at times up to 20 people representing as many aspects of the community as could be identified. And it took about 10 years all told start to finish. And Josie you weren't there. Now here is the news. There is a reason it made progress and why it worked to the extent it did. Everyone had there say, on an ongoing basis. Last thing I wont is a narrow group focussed on their own ideas telling the rest of us what to do.
Besides, people have legal rites to carry out business activity. Is someone going to tell existing business that they can't reopen because Council has a different vision.
Council is way over their heads. This sounds like Meglomania. The Mayor "I have decisions to make" Get a grip. You have Utopian ideas, great. Run on them in the next election. You certainly didn"t run on them in the past election.
I feel that post-secondary students are among the most vulnerable . Those that want to come to Tofino to study botany and biology face incredibly expensive housing as it is mostly targeting the tourist trade. Somebody should build a student dormitory and charge a rate that is lower than that of tourist accommodation. To accommodate this , the District of Tofino could create a special zone that is assessed at a lower rate than hotels or vacation rental properties. In exchange, the operator of the dormitory would agree to rent to only students . Somebody once told me that if I thought there was money in tourism that I should see the money in education !! I think this would be a good way to diversify the Tofino economy and look after students.
Once there was a wonderful donut. Everybody loved her. After a while she became more concerned with social media than those that loved her. The donut was getting stale. The more stale the donut got the bigger her ego grew. It got to the point that the donut was so stale that it wasn’t even any good for a day old. The donut needed to be thrown out.
Who nominated Aaron, Bob, and Josie to take over from God, determining the future path of history? C'mon, these are municipal politicians and hired office staff..... not urban and social planners with doctorate degrees in planning the future of society. These guys are totally beyond their capabilities.... and YOU, the taxpayer, are paying for it! They're elected and hired to keep the water running, the toilets flushing, and the snow plowed off the streets (Wait!, we don't have snow..... well my friends, take a look, we own snowplows anyway. Another example of how they're simply not living in the real world). Every time that this municipal government oversteps it's proper authority, like in this case, it costs the taxpayers money. Lots of money. Josie!! No one elected you to do this!! Go sit in the corner and shut up! The taxpayers of Tofino cannot afford you! Bob, Aaron.... we all see through you. Stop it! No one believes you! Take a vacation. If you forget to come back afterwards, that's OK.
"A more equitable economy". Really? Economic Planning? Really? D.O.T. mayor, council and staff? In charge of long term economic planning? You gotta be kidding. Can you think of any group of people less qualified for this job?
Where did they ever come up with the notion that they were capable of this? Or that anyone even wants them to do it?
You want to see more equitable? Doesn't that mean that the wealth gets distributed to more people, instead of just a few?
Sounds fair. More for the dishwashers, housekeepers, cleaners, attendants, clerks, and maintainance staff. Less for the CAO, CFO, and other top bureaucrats at D.O.T. More for the first responders and health care staff. Less for the shareholders of the major resorts. More for children and seniors and those with disabilities. Less for taxation. Sounds fair. Let's do it.
Ralph, doesn't Tofino already have a student dormitory, operated by the mayor and her husband? https://www.westerlynews.ca/news/council-questions-commercial-nature-of-tofino-botanical-gardens-student-dormitory/
Why have we wasted money on the Official Community Plan? It is created through a formal process and becomes law. Now it is apparently useless and irrelevant. The Politburo that is Tofino Council wants complete control of your life. Maybe they can map out a job for everyone, and set a goal for the grain harvest, and how many rubber boots and bottles of vodka need to be produced before winter. This kind of centralized planning has never failed before.
More vodka sounds like a good idea. Maybe it will make them all go away. Where are the Chinese government enforcers. They are better than Vodka. They can make anyone disappear.
Why is Josie always using the Regional context to sell her wares. I don't trust this woman at all. She doesn't give a ____ about Tofino. It is all ambition with her.
i agree with all of these comments wholeheartedly....and yes who elected these folks to engage in economic engineering and social planning? way way beyond their mandate and expertise...
The regional context was the platform Scott Fraser used as an elevator to get into where he is now pretending he's a negotiator. When it came to a choice between the narrow confines of the district of Tofino boundaries and that of the vast clatquot alberni regional district it seems that we were on the short end of the stick. The trouble with the elected office is delusions of Grandeur are part of the program....look at me!
All that the Mayor and Council had to do is defer to the Provincial and Federal Governments. It is these two levels of government that will decide when and how businesses will open. Local governments role will be limited to their mandate- local services such as water, sewer, parks and rec along with fiscal responsibility.
How business is conducted, specifically, will be outlined through guidelines set out be the Province and in some sectors of the economy, the Feds. The minutia will be decided by the business owners and the public will very likely hold business to account. The type of business that continues to operate and thrive on the west coast will be determined by established zoning, in place licensing and market forces, like it always has.
Mayor and council could have demonstrated that they understand their role. Then the leadership could have gone on to opine as to how the economy of Tofino may be to single minded, talked endlessly about nothing, spoke of times ago, and all agreed to have a report created that will be of little to no value.
It would have been calming to hear that they were focused on tasks within their “wheelhouse”. Imagine if they assured us that there would be a sharing of the financial pain, which would help ease ours come tax time. That would have established a sense that we are truly in this together.
On a certain level it is frightening that, during this crisis, when we the public are unable to attend meetings in person, our local government would endeavour to “restructure” our community and venture on some ill fated attempt to conjure up a more equitable one. That was a long story to say, don’t worry, they know not what they do and know not that they can’t do it.
If counsel is not sharing the pain there's no point listening to them or believing the malarkey they come up with. Committees? What an insane waste of time and energy. It is only suckers and the naïve who believe a committee will be part of a process. Yes it will be part of a process but only as lip service so the DOT can say they consulted with the public.
more of the same ludicrous rhetoric about staying busy when there's nothing that needs doing beyond sewer, water, streets, roads, = public works........ economic equality? try stalin. look at uganda & zimbabwe to name a few.
one component that's missing is the area of cultural tourism. tofino has narrowly focussed upon the failed environmental tourism sector which burns as much gas per day as commercial fishing (if not more) getting all those people out there to see the pristine environment. and the accommodation industry with it's logical spin off of expensive eating and drinking. Other sectors have developed on their own without input from council i.e. surfing, kayaking, sports fishing & whale watching.
it will definitely be painful and difficult for council to invent new enterprises(besides more government)that will capture 1/2 of the tourism income stream. maybe just give the poolelanders 1/2 of pacific sands gross income.....would that work?
COVID 19 PANDEMIC. We're "all in this together" Except, of course, D.O.T. senior staff. They're "all together into this". Disgusting that they would use this health care crisis as a method of feathering their own nests. Greedy pigs. Still drawing full salaries, doing very little of value, and having the unmitigated gall to propose that they now have the ability to forsee, plan, and predict the future of our community. People are unemployed. People are losing their businesses. People are suffering and hurting. Families are being battered. Front line workers and first responders are risking their lives. Meanwhile, the office staff at D.O.T. are fattening their bank accounts at the expense of their fellow residents. Greedy, lazy, egotistic, self righteous pigs! Mayor and council are permitting it. We, the people, will remember this.
Yes and when the crisis is over the difficult job of the mayor and council will be announcing the new indigenous tax of 5% on all businesses. Socialism 5% of the time. Unless you're the mayor who it looks like is going to subdivide her property in order to give half to the tribal Council. A much more socialist gesture than 5%.
One big problem. No one has a clue what Council is referring to. The meeting as reported is a mash of generalities and political speak. Wonder if Council even knows what it is getting or agreed to,or getting at, or into. CEO Bob may have to convene a séance or use a Ouija board.
Or it could resemble the old advertisers schtick. "Run it up the fag pole, see if anyone salutes It" or "throw it out on the stoop, see if the cat licks it up".

The property Tofino turned down for commercial use, cause it was supposed to be a Park. Members of Parliament for the Comox Valley have confirmed they are donating the portion of a recent pay hike to help out people in need locally during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) released a list of MPs who were giving the pay raise as of April 1 to charity. The list has been circulating on social media. At the end of March, the organization called on MPs to donate their annual pay raise back.
This month, MPs received a 2.1 per cent hike, which increased based salaries to $182,656. The annual hike has been practice since Bill C-30, which as adopted 15 years ago to set annual salary and allowance increases.
To cancel the raise, Parliament would need to be recalled, but Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that he is not recalling it before April 20 in order to help fight the spread of the novel coronavirus. In response, many federal politicians have offered to donate the increase. (Trudeau is on the list of those donating the raise.)
Courtenay-Alberni MP Gord Johns is included on the list. He posted a statement on his Facebook page on March 31: “I was pleased to donate my Member of Parliament cost-of-living increase to local organizations and agencies that are providing front line services to vulnerable citizens throughout our riding.”
my understanding of this weirdness is that the new finance hire, while with the chamber of commerce/tourism tofino was the author of a scheme to tax all businesses in tofino 5% and give the 5% over to band councils to do as they please. hired on during this corona disaster despite the need for frugality and cutbacks...then quickly hustled into the secret keepers who are dreaming up how to tell us, when the corona is gone, that we will paying an indigenous tax of 5%....it will go to first nations because they are the most vulnerable.....not the elderly of all groups, or the handicapped, or children with learning problems, or the crab apple people or the meares vistas or any of the other folks who don't have a dime or a pot to piss in let alone something to eat....one might think that this concept should go to referendum. its a tax that goes somewhere other than the district of tofino for unspecified purposes....kind of like mafia money....the mafia makes its victims feel vulnerable if they don't pay..
If they can get them (the pigs) off the ground, is but one problem, but will they fly, and can they get them back to earth. Like some Apollo mission. They could be lost in space forever. Pig shit across the universe....."nothings gonna change my world, nothings gonna change my world"
Aborting pre takeoff would definitely be our "finest hour."
Don't worry Grandma says "If pigs could fly my Jimmy could land them"
Accommodations are actually listed as an essential service. It's only through the strong sense of community that all the resorts and vacation rentals have remained closed. There's nothing actually stopping them from being open.
This is great news. Now that people have invested millions in tourism we are going to go back to logging and fishing . In those days there were only two district staff in the office.

ReplyDeleteI've heard the current local government is training pigs to fly.
ReplyDeleteIf they can get them (the pigs) off the ground, is but one problem, but will they fly, and can they get them back to earth. Like some Apollo mission. They could be lost in space forever. Pig shit across the universe....."nothings gonna change my world, nothings gonna change my world"
ReplyDeleteAborting pre takeoff would definitely be our "finest hour."
Don't worry Grandma says "If pigs could fly my Jimmy could land them"
8:44AM... No, not accurate. They hire them for positions in the administration.
ReplyDeleteAs stated it will be the Federal and Provincial who will decide when things in the province will reopen, not the DOT.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how many members of Council and District staff own vacation rentals?
Give it up Josie, you have no decisions to make, forget this "more equitable economy" nonsense.
Who owns a "student" dorm?
ReplyDeleteAccommodations are actually listed as an essential service. It's only through the strong sense of community that all the resorts and vacation rentals have remained closed. There's nothing actually stopping them from being open.
ReplyDelete7:53 AM. Arson is a crime.
ReplyDelete@8:56 AM.
ReplyDeleteSorry, I don't follow.
Josie's declarations are becoming as erratic as Trump, and smack of a dictatorial attitude.
