No fishing (that's a reasonable decision according to her), restrict boat traffic to protect those whales, lets get those salmon farms shut down, no development, more bike lanes, less parking, get the sewage treatment issue settled, on her watch and regardless of the cost (she needs to be able to claim the credit for it), a tree protection bylaw, a formal ban on single use plastics ...... and God knows what other ideas our green friends might think of in addition.

There's a crab fishery in Cheaseapeake Bay where it is only allowed to fish from a boat powered by sails, and only one claw of each crab is harvested. The crab is then returned to the sea, where it grows back the claw, and can can be harvested again and again, always available for breeding stock as well. A 100% totally ecological and sustainable fishery.
How about restricting whale watchers to a similar idea? Sails only! No motors, (or only a small kicker for docking purposes) no fuel, no carbon, no pollution.
There are other whales to observe ,then the threatened southern resident Orca population, in our area. The grey whales, humpback whales and transient Orca whales are doing very well. The southern residents are ranging further away, going as far as central California and north to Alaska. Hopefully the residents will realize that relocating may be a good idea! Whale watching is a great industry , if carefully monitored.

I believe many of the wild life watching companies in Tofino are over doing their trips and only concerned about maximizing profits. Look at the number of boats going to hot springs with lines of people waiting to get in the springs. 300-500 people a day? They have ruined it. I hear reports of 11 boats watching one bear with multiple boats from the same company over selling both these trips. I see boats doing bear trips when the tides aren't low knowing that they won't see bears but happy to take tourists dollars. This is pure greed and leaves a bad taste with tourists. If only our chamber of commerce would do something ;) yes, that's sarcasm
We need to limit all these trips including whale watching. We need a balance here and not over sell every last piece of Tofino. For far too long the people who like to pretend that they are in charge are only serving their own pocketbooks. Karma has a way of catching up.
We have a few good tour operators but the bad ones are ruining it for the rest.

Each day they weigh the whales. Once before breakfast and once after dinner. Sometimes after "tensies", if Mom allows snacking. Maybe the whales are eating less because the process of the weigh-ins has disturbed their routine. This is just as likely but probably BS as well.
If the whales are eating less it is probably due to the price gouging at the COOP or they can't stand the summer check out line-ups. In this regard I have the greatest sympathy for them. It is a disgrace and must be stopped. I don,t know how we can treat such an obvious and serious problem in such a cavalier fashion.

A simple extrapolation or interpolation, yields the degree of feeding activity from expected values or normal. 18% sounds about right, give or take. Society is getting increasingly stupid when it comes to understanding matters of the scientific method. The Chinese and Europeans do a much better job of educating their youth.
