  1. No salmon fishing. No whale watching. What is next ?

  2. RE 7:56PM...... Next? For Tofino? How about 4 years of left wing environmental based political decisions as Josie cements her qualifications to be the Green candidate in the next Provincial election, following the successful campaign by the pro- proportional representation faction.

Yep. No fishing (that's a reasonable decision according to her), restrict boat traffic to protect those whales, lets get those salmon farms shut down, no development, more bike lanes, less parking, get the sewage treatment issue settled, on her watch and regardless of the cost (she needs to be able to claim the credit for it), a tree protection bylaw, a formal ban on single use plastics ...... and God knows what other ideas our green friends might think of in addition.

That, my friend, is what 85% of the voters in this town just elected.
    Actions beget consequences.
Don't blame me. I voted for Jarmo.

  3. Whats next? No wild salmon. No whales. Disintegrating forest ecosystems without the important nutrients gained from the marine ecosystems. Reduction in oxygen production. Sped up climate change. Tsunami. No tofino. Move to prince george where you can talk economy with like minded rednecks, yet still be angry because you have no job. Unless you want to be forest firefighter.

  4. So there you go. 10:48 and 2:05 are probably going to fall in love and move in together and start a family. A nice family. But they'll have to leave Tofino, cause they won't be able to find a place to live.

  5. 2:05...... ????? Climate change brings tsunamis? Amazing! Thanks for sharing that. I never knew.......

  6. 2:05 So angry dude. What's next more anger. That will fix it.

  7. It is one of the fastest growing areas of so-called eco-tourism, a supposedly environmentally-friendly way to get close to nature enjoyed by more than 11 million people.
But research has found that whale-watching may be responsible for damaging changes in the mammals' behaviour and could be putting them off feeding. A study of killer whales by researchers from the University of St Andrews in Scotland and Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, has revealed that the approach of boats disturbed the animals to such an extent that they decreased their food intake by up to 18 per cent.
Whale-watching is claimed to be a way of raising awareness of the giant mammals while providing an alternative source of income for communities that traditionally hunted them.
Such eco-tourism is worth more than £1 billion. In Britain alone, about 100 companies offer whale-watching trips from Cornwall, Wales and the west coast of Scotland. Rob Williams, a sea mammal researcher from St Andrews based on Pearse Island, British Columbia, who led the killer whale research, said that although all boat traffic within an average of 3 sq mi (5 sq km) disturbed the whales' behaviour, whale-watching boats were the only vessels that actively searched for the mammals.
"The most contentious example of human disturbance may be commercial whale-watching operators," said Mr Williams. "The exponential increase in commercial whale-watching activity has caused some to question the benign nature of that industry.

"This study provides indirect evidence that feeding activity is disrupted by the presence of boats, which could lead to a substantial decrease in energy-gain opportunities. Overall, whales reduced their time spent feeding from 13 per cent to 10 per cent when boats were present. They showed not only a lower probability of continuing feeding, but also a lower probability of initiating a feeding bout."
The study on killer whales off the coast of British Columbia over seven years revealed that pods were more likely to attempt to distance themselves from the boats when they came into the same area and stop social behaviour.
Conservation groups believe that the effects of whale-watching boats on killer whales also apply to other whale populations. They fear that dwindling food stocks are forcing whales to spend more time searching for food and, if they are frightened away from a good feeding spot by whale-watching activity, they become weaker and could even starve.
They are now calling for whale-watching companies to be issued permits before they can carry out trips and want designated routes to prevent whales from being chased.
Vanessa Williams-Grey, the head of the responsible whale-watching programme at the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, said: "Researchers over the last few years are starting to notice whale populations being displaced from favourite feeding or resting areas by the presence of too many vessels."
Many countries, including Britain, protect whales under wildlife legislation but it is hard to regulate and enforce.
Mark Henrys, who runs Northern Light Charters, a sealife cruise company on the Isle of Mull on the west coast of Scotland, admitted that he was concerned by the behaviour of some of his fellow operators.
"You get boats on daytrips radioing each other to report a sighting and a stream of boats turning up in an area," he said. "That is where you get a harder impact on the whales and dolphins. I think it is very credible what this research is saying."

  8. If the tourists stayed home, I would be ok with that.

  9. I say stop whale watching all together! Enough is enough. Leave them be.
Man does nothing but f++ things up for all creatures including himself.
    Another example of greed.
More boats, more operators, more noise, getting closer, more often
    But no more whales

  11. There's a crab fishery in Cheaseapeake Bay where it is only allowed to fish from a boat powered by sails, and only one claw of each crab is harvested. The crab is then returned to the sea, where it grows back the claw, and can can be harvested again and again, always available for breeding stock as well. A 100% totally ecological and sustainable fishery.

How about restricting whale watchers to a similar idea? Sails only! No motors, (or only a small kicker for docking purposes) no fuel, no carbon, no pollution.

  13. There are other whales to observe ,then the threatened southern resident Orca population, in our area. The grey whales, humpback whales and transient Orca whales are doing very well. The southern residents are ranging further away, going as far as central California and north to Alaska. Hopefully the residents will realize that relocating may be a good idea! Whale watching is a great industry , if carefully monitored.

Could it be the Orcas are telling us something?
Carefully monitored by whom? Taxes go up to pay for enforcement? People complain about too much government intervention. All reverts back to 3:38

  16. well, put yourself in their place for a moment and swim a couple miles in their flipppers…

imagine being stalked 24/7 and constantly harassed by the hum of motors and ultra sonic noise.

  17. I believe many of the wild life watching companies in Tofino are over doing their trips and only concerned about maximizing profits. Look at the number of boats going to hot springs with lines of people waiting to get in the springs. 300-500 people a day? They have ruined it. I hear reports of 11 boats watching one bear with multiple boats from the same company over selling both these trips. I see boats doing bear trips when the tides aren't low knowing that they won't see bears but happy to take tourists dollars. This is pure greed and leaves a bad taste with tourists. If only our chamber of commerce would do something ;) yes, that's sarcasm

We need to limit all these trips including whale watching. We need a balance here and not over sell every last piece of Tofino. For far too long the people who like to pretend that they are in charge are only serving their own pocketbooks. Karma has a way of catching up.

We have a few good tour operators but the bad ones are ruining it for the rest.

  18. The big problem.... It's not too many people, or too many tourists, or too much growth. It's too many people with self righteous opinions and over active vocal cords. We need to do this, we should do that, we need to control those........ How about you all just shut the fuck up, mind your own business, clean up your own side of the street, and not be so hypocritical and judgemental about what someone else is doing. Who asked for your ideas on how the world should be operating anyhow? Today, you're all about saving the whales, tomorrow it'll be about the trees, next you'll be bitching again about fish farms, soon to be followed up by the next environmental flavour of the week.......and then you'll next be seen on the beach, with your unleashed dog, chasing the birds away..... (But you'll not speak out against the dogs, because that's not a popular environmental topic this week). Did you ever think about the fact that your surfboard is fibreglass, that thing won't bio- degrade for 50,000 years. I dare you to suggest that surfboards be banned. It's so easy to sit back and hate someone else and condemn what they're doing, as you continue to live your own easy life as a consumer, a polluter, a part of the problem just the same as all the rest of us. Because of people like you, the environmental movement has degraded into a partially informed jumble of aggravating background noise that most people simply choose to ignore, and many have come to resent, rather than support.

  19. 9:22 sounds almost as bad as the CBC. Why should we put up with that crap?

  20. Ban all surfboards, There I said it..... I feel good for that. It's like I am newly liberated. Thrown off the yoke of intellectual slavery.
Better yet, ban surfing. The sea life of the near shore and intertidal zones have endured enough. Beach sands are being over compacted with the likes of beach volleyball and marathon frizbee sessions. Millions of mites and hoppers are being destroyed every day. The earth can't take this anymore. Liberate the earth!
Now I am feeling super free. Free of all prejudices and hatred of hundreds of years of oppression. I have found my purpose in life. So YIPPEE.
Besides there is a shortage of parking. At least make them bike or hike in from the ferry terminal. Those damn university kids are looking too pudgy anyways.

No wait.... It is a proven fact that white university kids bike more frequently than racial minorities who are actually the majority,... but, whatever. It is proven. Biking is obviously racist. Ban biking. Make those white privileged pigs walk.

I say ban university, while we are at it. Ya man, screw all you learned types. You are the oppressor. Screw you, and when I get power I will ban exercise as well.. Maybe pudgyness is actually our natural state. Skinnyness is way over rated. It is a fascist construct. It enables oppression and is hardly inclusive anyway. The excessive exertions of capitalist Kulture, consume too much oxygen, leaving less of it for wildlife and poorer people all over the world.... Exercise produces more CARBON DIOXIDE. WHOA!!! Ban everything for mercy's sake. It would be way more efficient and would save lives.

  21. 6:34 PM ....." A study of killer whales by researchers from the University of St Andrews in Scotland and Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, has revealed that the approach of boats disturbed the animals to such an extent that they decreased their food intake by up to 18 per cent." I call bullshit! How in hell could anyone possibly know this, to this degree of accuracy? Just because some guy decided to post this "data" on the internet hardly makes it true. It is obviously in the same vein as Trump's famous "Lots of people are saying.....", just more alternative facts to support today's chosen point of view. Discredits the guy's entire page, I now believe none of it.

  22. Each day they weigh the whales. Once before breakfast and once after dinner. Sometimes after "tensies", if Mom allows snacking. Maybe the whales are eating less because the process of the weigh-ins has disturbed their routine. This is just as likely but probably BS as well.

If the whales are eating less it is probably due to the price gouging at the COOP or they can't stand the summer check out line-ups. In this regard I have the greatest sympathy for them. It is a disgrace and must be stopped. I don,t know how we can treat such an obvious and serious problem in such a cavalier fashion.

    Yours scincerely

  23. Hey Admiral, you dipstick, you don't know squat. They don't weigh the whales. Might as well say it was the Colonel, in the pantry, with the knife. Good God man get serious.
They would have to use a displacement approach. The variance of tidal highs and lows from predicted values would indicate a net increase or decrease in the size of the whales being studied, in a given area. A simple extrapolation or interpolation, yields the degree of feeding activity from expected values or normal. 18% sounds about right, give or take.
Society is getting increasingly stupid when it comes to understanding matters of the scientific method. The Chinese and Europeans do a much better job of educating their youth.
