I agree completely with 11:13, vacation rentals are precisely the reason young family can't get a start. 'The housing crisis in Tofino is a direct result of the hundreds of vacation rentals. anyone who denies this fact is disillusioned.
I disagree completely with 12:58 PM; The reason that a young family can't get a start is because of the anti-development policy at the District Office. If you don't have a place to live, you can look to your municipal government for someone to point fingers at and to hold to blame for it. It's not the fault of vacation rentals. That's actually where those "young family's" jobs and incomes are coming from. In fact, many young families use their vacation rental income to supplement their mortgage and taxes, thereby enabling them to afford a home in a high priced real-estate market. Without that vacation rental income they couldn't afford a home here at all. It's easy to jump up and scream "Evil Vacation Rentals!!". If you're really looking for the devil in this mix, check out the corner of Third and Campbell. District mayor, council, and staff are the real culprits in this mess, not "young families" trying to pay their mortgage by short term renting their guest suite. Anyone who cannot see this truth has been disillusioned by the mayor's war on tourism, that has produced zero in the line of long term accomodations for anyone. Just cause she tells you that vacation rentals are the reason you can't find a home does NOT mean that it's true. The reason you can't find a home is the fault of mayor and council, and the mayors and councils that came before them..... and the responsibility for fixing the problem rests upon the same mayor and council. It's an election year. In a few months you'll have the opportunity to tell those people what you think of their lack of performance. Get out and vote them out.
Agree with 9:05. No supply, higher prices. Again, no supply, higher prices. Councils have been antidevelopment for too long. When was the last upzoning that would create any significant new supply.
Gateway? Actually a downzone from commercial
Gibson street? Actually rezoned in the mid nineties.
Go back, way back....Councils for more than a decade have opposed all significant rezoning and development applications.....They have strangled the supply. They control supply......Are you happy with this performance?
Their selfish attitudes have screwed a whole generation....and the viability of the community.
