Wait until then. Sewage? We're waiting on that. Housing? Be patient, things are in the works. Just wait. There, all problems have been addressed. No one can say the wrong decision was made on any of them. Avoid. Delay. Procrastinate. Duck and Cover. Your. A**.
The only position that can be said to accurately represent the position of "tofino" is the one we have been polled on. That was a clear no to the "rink". We have not been polled on these other options and posibillities. So I conclude the Mayor is expressing her own view. How would you expect "Tofino' to respond to a suggestion of a pool and a rink when it clearly indicates it a "no" to the rink.
tofino needs a swimming pool and a fitness/wellness centre for every one that lives here. fancy eateries and expensive booze does nothing for the well being of those of us who pay taxes.

Instead they assume a role of "Imperial Ruler", and act only according to their own wants, desires, opinions, and beliefs. Their overblown belief in their own superiority (which they suddenly achieved when the ballots were counted) allows them to ignore the wants and needs of their constituents, and fulfill their own inner needs to satisfy their own quest for recognition, by preaching to and ruling the "rabble". They think that they're smarter than you. They think that their ideas are more important. They think that they "know it all" and you're an uninformed idiot. They think that you're stupid, and it's easy to pull the wool over your eyes, that you don't see yourself getting lied to, deceived, and cheated. They think that a cherubic smile and fake politeness will shut you up so they can proceed with their own agendas. They think that they can continue to strip your wallet, waste the money, and you'll never notice....or if you do notice, that you'll just accept it as inevitable, shut up, and go away. (after you've signed the cheque). People being paid double and triple the rate that the private sector pays for the same duties. Some guy getting $100K per year to mow the grass. A "festival co-ordinator"!! Consultants paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to research the goings-on of a small village of 1800 souls. No one yet knows how much has been wasted on this South Chestermans legal battle that has produced exactly zero housing units, but every B&B operator in town know how much it has cost them as their license rates skyrocket. Still no housing available. Still no development approved. The old building at the corner of 4th and Campbell being renovated, because approval to build a new building was priced out of the market by DCC fees and municipal bureaucracy. The stupidity, the waste, the foolishness goes on and on and on and meanwhile the fat paycheques continue to be issued in the district office, council continues to do little or nothing about it, taxes continue to rise, and the future don't look promising. I talked to a business friend the other day about the possibility of future plans. First thing, they told me, is to get your ideas and your money away from Tofino, you can't hope to do anything here. The climate is too toxic. It's the responsibility of mayor and council to fix this toxic climate. Unfortunately, they're a big part of the cause of it, but their egos prevent them from seeing their own part in the problem. Until someone admits that it's broken, a fix remains unlikely.
To 9;20 What? You want cheap food and booze as part of your healthy life style plan? Everyone in Tofino already has shares in the best wellness centre in the world. Didn't your mother tell you? Now go outside and play.
though a bit off the posted topic, it is interesting to note the very obvious desire to manipulate outcomes of input received at an "Open House" while ignoring the message that the public has taken the time to express. During the Feb. council meeting on cannabis, Councillor Thicke said "We've heard from those people with loud and energetic voices, but how are we going to capture the voices of the young and vulnerable who are affected as well". She went so far as to suggest that Council should "actively solicit some responses" from Parent Advisory Council.
This is subterfuge. If the public comes out to say they want something that you don't want, say you need more information from different groups. Then suggest that the group that spoke was in some way flawed, having "loud and energetic voices". Suggesting that they are not the people we are looking to hear from. From what I read, there was a reasonable cross section of citizens in attendance. I did not attend as I was shy in admitting that I enjoyed a puff now and again and worried about how I might be viewed in the future. The meeting was advertised and the Westerly wrote on the issue. If there were concerned parties with less energetic voices, where were they?
I have to say it was shocking to read that a councillor suggest that they actively seek out those that, hopefully or likely, will be supporters of a single Councillors opinion on how things should be.
This is all to support some other comments made here. That some Councillors don't understand what the purpose of their job is, to represent the communities wishes and listen to them when they speak, rather than to direct the lives of the citizens and tell them how they should live.

Why wouldn't the councillor in question simply state she had doubts or concerns on the other side of the issue and defend her position, if that was the case. One might respect that. This circumlocution and manipulation is painfully what politics seems to be about these days.
A few years ago, when the proposed RCMP building was being opposed by at least one councillor, behind the scenes, various members of the public were being solicited for negative letters by the same Councillor. Then low and behold it was "look, the public is opposed" "I told you so". when the letters were presented, as if unsolicited and coached.
On another occasion. A particular councillor, while voting on a development application, had put in their own offer to purchase the same property. Not surprisingly the Councillor encouraged everyone to oppose the application. This kind of double dealing is all to common.
I agree with those who say "get rid of the whole lot of them". There is an established culture of doubletalk, deception and deflection on our council. I would prefer to deal with a new group of honest folk even if the experience level is lower. This group exhibits experience in too many of the wrong things.
