Interesting thought...... this bylaw would only apply to any use of "land" within the District. Pot sales from a boat would be unregulated, just like in the old days!
absolute silliness. there is a bcl, private liquor store, the coop amongst others selling cigarettes, etc. but we need some kind of double standard for pot? we live in a capitalist economy. if the pot shop makes no profit it closes. if it sells to minors it gets punished. if it does not pay taxes it gets punished. laws are already or will be here to govern said business. the municipality does not need to create more laws surrounding this issue.
9:46PM. It's important that staff and council deal with this important issue. Otherwise they might need to keep busy by addressing issues such as water supply, sewage treatment, and the lack of housing in the community. There must be priorities, like protecting folks from reefer madness, organizing festivals, attacking our neighbors at South Chestermans, and, don't forget, stopping any development of residential accomodations. The fact that we had a federal election where this cannabis issue was voted upon and decided by the people of Canada doesn't seem to matter. Tofino council seems to think that their opinions are more valuable than the democratically expressed will of the people. Tofino's going to make up a special law all by themselves!! This is your tax dollars at work. Be grateful. Drink your kool-aid. There's an election coming up in November...... VOTE THEM OUT!!
This really surprises me, from their crazy decisions I would have thought that the majority of council members have been smoking grass for years. No problem, we can just stop at the pot shops in Alberni on our way to the coast.
Let's create a law that makes sure the marijuana industry stays on the black market, cannot be taxed, leaves no room for quality control, wastes RCMP time for enforcement of frivolous laws, increases the carbon footprint as the people who want legal weed have to drive to port alberni or ukee, etc. etc. Some people have been guessing who this would be beneficial too? Perhaps somebody on council has friends that want to keep their black market going? I kid I kid.
Following this morning's huge public turnout, supporting the approval of cannabis retail in Tofino, Councillor Baert was seen leading the rest of council on a suicidal mass plunge off the 1st street dock. Yeah, that's fake news.......but hey, eh?
did anybody on this forum go? I was at work. was it a big turnout? since it was solely a public input meeting and not a debate by the government on said law, the next council meeting, which I believe is on the 27th, should be very important for a public turnout. too bad we were not having a public meeting on useful laws surrounding the legalization, just a ban on land use by said industry.
I'd estimate 40 people could not get in and speak on the matter. Could not hear what was going on from the hallway. I left like many others upon hearing that the Mayor expected public input would run until 11am at which point if still needed it would be carried over to another day. I returned at 10:45 only to find the meeting had moved on to other agenda items and thatI'd missed my chance to speak.
Seriously the Mayor and council weren't going to listen anyway as they have their plans made. Public input meetings are only held so they can rubber stamp their plans and say that they complied with the municipal act.
Looking on the brighter side, there are many people who showed up to the meeting who would like nothing more than to elect a completely different mayor and council this fall. This gives lots of time to organize a complete set of candidates to get this town moving in a better direction.
I agree 6:12 It's of utmost priority we toss these f@** idiots !!! Please urge people you know to run! Anyone is better than these antiquated thinkers. We have to take control of this little town. These hypocrits should all check into the nearest Berwick
all you name callers. you just minimize the quality of your criticism by stooping to that. Run then. not to say I disagree with you but the last couple of elections, there were alternative candidates that did not even get close. I guess because it is the same 400 people or so that vote and all the whiners were "away" or "forgot" or "are too "apathetic."
Shorty just rolled over in his grave....

There’s a petition against this bylaw being circulated. To be found at many of the usual locations for such things.
