  1. There was really no need for a survey. All you have to do is check out the ball diamonds, the soccer pitches, the trail systems, Canada Day compared to Ukee Days etc. etc. and it becomes very evident as to which town is actually a community.3

  2. Tofino and Ucluelet are both great communities.
They have been for a long time without an expensive multiplex.Check out how many kids are surfing these days.

  3. To 6:45, You might want to clarify that veiled statement. I hope the Salal Curtain doesn,t raise it's ugly head again. Why can't we accept that both communities are entitled to their own priorities, needs and perspective.

  4. To Samantha Hackett. Maybe you didn't want the survey to begin with? Obviously you are not the one to bring the communities together when you have so little respect. You see it is all a matter of perspective. Who is the hostage and who is speaking like the bully extortionist.

  5. The proponents are absolutely BULLIES. If this was a workplace and the citizens of Tofino were the workers, the citizens could claim workplace harassment.

I am tired of having people think because I am a property owner I can pay for something I don't want, need or will ever use or that anyone in my extended family will ever use.

The one good thing that is going to come out of this is that no project like this will ever be allowed to be shilled off the ground in Tofino. The taxpayers having witnessed this circus will not remain silent and complacent with anything that affects their taxes. There is no free lunch.
The taxpaying citizens of Tofino have said no to the project and that should be the end of it.

Donate the fund raised funds back to the communities from where the funds originated to be used for more localized projects such as tsunami preparedness.

Oh and finally the proponents who won't give up trying to shove this down the taxpayer's throats should think carefully about how disliked they will become should they persist.

  6. THe multiplex society has been coming off quite callous in the last few articles about this issue. Not doing a great job trying to convince people of the need for this project I would say. And for the Ukee localist at the top of the comments, 45 percent for and 43.4 percent opposed in Ukee surveying is no resounding support for this project. With such a poorly worded and weighted survey trying to get the answer it wants, I would say the survey's results were a disaster for the society. These communities have lots to offer without the need for an ice rink. I know that there is also figure skating and skate racing but I would assume that ice hockey is one of the biggest pulls to an ice rink. With concussion awareness and the sheer high cost of ice hockey, the numbers of kids participating in hockey is going down every year. why would that trend suddenly change in these communities that have so many sports options available that most communities in Canada just do not have. I would support 2 modest pools within Tofino and ukee to increase walk up usage rather than a necessity for a 30km commute that will affect usage. A pool is what is needed for towns surrounded by water. An ice rink is frivolous and costly. rant over.

  7. Re 9:36 AM You are wrong. The people who would have to pay for the thing cared and they said no!

  8. 12:56 PM You are wrong. You cannot have any type of pool, modest or not, in Tofino. There's no water. Best you'd accomplish is a concrete lined hole in the ground.

  9. 3:03 We already have a hole in the ground lined with concrete, call it a skate park. maybe they could use it as a pool Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Ah right! No water....

  10. Actually, that skate park came to be there from the efforts of the kids (and parents) that wanted it. They worked, they raised funds, they saved and scrounged and built that thing with their own sweat. They didn't expect "someone else" to carry the expense of their wants.... and the entire community got together and got behind them and helped. The skatepark has been there for years since, used all the time, never a problem or expense to anyone. Maybe the multiplex society should take a look at it and see if they can discover what a "community" can actually accomplish if they really want to, instead of squabbling over how to get someone else to pay for it, and causing strife and division over a project that could actually have 100% community support if it was managed properly.
I'll remind all that when K K first started this idea, there was no mention of tax dollars, it was a community oriented fundraiser, managed by volunteers (not paid future politicians needing a job), and received overwhelming support from all facets of the community. Something went wrong.
That don't mean it can't be fixed.

  11. 4:33 I have to agree with almost everything you said there. I contributed to that cause myself. It truly was a pull up your bootstraps and get it done effort. Full on volunteerism and community minded. Miche in particular work tirelessly for years.

I hope, if you read it again, you might see that whoever brought up the Skate Park as a potential swimming pool was probably attempting humour. Relax, they ain't doing anything with that skate park.
Unfortunately I contributed to the Multiplex as well but felt ripped off after "What's his name" split with some of the collection. Disgraceful
