  2. Time to slow things down a little before the little bit of town we have left disappears.

  3. 10:13AM....... You're getting your wish already. This years "War on Tourism", sponsored by mayor and council, is already resulting in lost reservations, lost business, lost revenue, lost customers for every business in town, and needless expense and inconvenience for every accomodation provider. If you're so concerned, why not run for council next election? Feature "Build a Wall! Keep 'em over there!" as your platform.

  4. @10:13 AM

Many other mid and northern towns on the island are trying to speed things up, so that what little bit of town they have... doesn't disappear.

Be careful what you wish for.

  5. I'm assuming what 10:13 is trying to say is SUSTAINABILITY. And I don't think that council has declared a "war on tourism" but a war on law breakers instead.

  6. For all you complainers about tourism why did you choose to live in Tofino anyway? Tofino sits between the Pacific Ocean and The Pacific Rim National Park. One of the most popular National Parks in Canada. National Parks are deemed to be special natural environments that have been selected to be saved, visited and explored by not only Canadians but the entire world. Ya people are going to want to come here !. Tofino has never been more economically healthy and has provided a perfect environment for young entepenures and families to succeed enough financially to raise their children in an amazing town and surroundings....Just look at all the baby strollers up and down the streets and Wick Elementary is experiencing max capacity...Tourists look for all forms of accommodation. If there wasn't a demand for VR's there wouldn't be any. Tofino blew their chance in 2005 to come up a with a reasonable well planned and thoughtful bylaw to allow this form of accomodation to exist properly and professionally....Now it's playing catch up and with Air B&B,VRBO etc..now in the mix...well...monumental task....If you can't live with VR's in Tofino legal or not I suggest you lobby Mr Trudeau to remove Pacific Rim from our National Park system or......just move.

It seems everyone wants to close the gate after they have arrived. Very very few locals have been born & raised here. The complainers are all transplanted themselves.

  8. Good news for all those who wish for a return to "how it used to be"....... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/06/06/abba-sing-together-for-first-time-in-more-than-30-years/

  9. The old timers, old Tofino stock, before there was tourism, were tough and tight knit. The community had its internal battles, personality conflicts in the isolated fish bowl, but they were much more open to development and change than the more recent newcomers. For many, existence itself was a struggle. Then, there was fishing and logging and people wanted to see the town grow. At first they seemed less judgemental... till people came and looked down their nose at their work, their life, and at them. Just a bunch of "red neck scrubs". This place needs "protecting." Now most folks seem to want to stop everything, based on some perceived evil. Can't stand to see change. Most everything about our society, and it's history is seen as evil and dark. Todays brand of "progressives" are the most conservative people you could ever meet. They are open to very little and have a ridged view of most issues.

And then there are those, a few, who have come and just want to rip the place off, and don"t give a shit. Their philosophy is based on self interest.

    Just saying

  10. The war is not on Tourism, the war is on who gets what percentage of the pie. More AirBnB's means less traffic to the Botanical Gardens, Conversely more wealth shared with local home owners, less space for minimum wagers to work at the Botanical Gardens.

Incredible short sighted council on being creative with housing and doing something.... more guarantees the Botanical Gardens will profit, even the CAO stepped out of council bcs of a potential conflict.... they all have their fingers in the pie you idiots (except for homeless Greg). The outcome is stupid locals left bickering on the web and pointing fingers at each other over STR's......

You are all finished, the play is now in motion and you are all too stupid to figure it out! At the end of the day, when you finally get over yourself and realize what is happening... Tofino will have become Whistler!

  11. Greed is an interesting motivator 7:03. Funny how you confuse it with being "progressive". It is seldom a prime element in sustainable growth. Funny how avoiding cumbersome bylaws is. Some individuals like a level playing field while others just moan about the inability to do whatever they want

  13. I post to this site to contribute to the debate....No you don't.

That is not debate it is just being contrary....No it isn't

Monty Python lives and the farcical becomes real.....No it doesn't

  14. With out bylaws and abidance to them the place becomes another wild west. Any society requires rules. It is amazing the spin people put on their illegal activities to try to justify them. We may have been born at night, just not last night!

  15. RE last mesage.

Your outlook is half as lame as your little ending cliche. You're about government regulating private enterprise. Problem is your not smart enough - or discouraged with life - to see that it slows down the economy. This gives the average guy less. Would be frat if people looked objectively at the facts with a bias free and rational perspective.
I'm going to be kind and not hurt you with the truth. My advise is to let go and be more open minded.

Are you even aware that you fell off the turnip truck?

    ReplyDelete
  17. hehe. turnip truck. because history has proven that the law is always created equally and to the benefit to all society. mnhm.

    ReplyDelete
  18. haha - some laws have proven an absolute disaster - not all laws are created equally ??
fall off the truck again have you ?
back to the drawing board i say
your choice of history books is very limited hmmmmmmmm

  19. I agree .. Poor guy. Falling off the truck has the guy totally lost.

Law, and the implementation are two very different things.... Most often not in line with each other.

Lets talk about the law then. We have council members, who decide on zoning for vacation rentals. The same council members who own vacation rentals or B&B's. They decide against other vacation rentals - reducing the supply. This benefits them as this reduction increases the value or their vacation rentals. This is called using the law to benefit themselves financially. More commonly known as corruption.

I'm starting to think its not you falling off the turnip truck, its that you're a mouth piece for the village council. This is also known as propaganda.

Its blogs like this that help expose people like yourself and give transparency. More commonly known as democracy.

  20. This was discussed today at the post office. In the case of South Chestermans it was zoned by a different council .Regardless it would be hard to assemble a Tofino Council that wouldn't be constantly in conflict with some aspect of the tourism sector . Pacific Sands has expanded under this council and the duplex by the hospital was given a temporary use permit for short term rentals.

  21. 5 27pm here. i was laughing at the turnip truck joke and sarcastically mentioned that all laws are equal ala animal farm. calm down if you think that was serious. sheesh. we all know what a good lawyer can accomplish with the same law, benefiting client while law is applied differently if not well versed or well represented in court. oj anyone?
