I think preparing for disaster is a much more important issue right now than vacation rentals, affordable housing, sewage treatment, infrastructure, the environment's etc. the disaster is actually the loss of a community which happened when getting those hotel taxes in our grubby little hands became more important than managing what happens for the benefit of the people that live here. at some point only the wealthy will live here.
lost in translation... the homeowners of Tofino.... were sideswiped with misinformation by staff of DOT, and furthermore by elected council. Before any one knew it, the big commercial resorts had reclaimed any lost business from those small 3 bedroom B&B's. Josie Botanical garden no longer needed the $15,000 property tax waiver from the District and the money was flowing again.... every day the brinks truck came into town and took the money away. Everyone felt relieved to see all those bylaw officers running around responding to complaints against each other... giving tickets to people who have a beer at the beach....
The Art of War: Create a distraction, ram through new rules, make lots of claims, pit each other against each other..... divide and conquer
