The encouragement of bad beach behaviors by some locals and their dogs off leash does not help the community. I keep getting with some regularity complaints from visitors about their beach experiences. Multiple times people have said that they were not EVER coming back.
The town should require dog owners to pass a dog obedience and training test with their dogs before owners and dogs can both be licensed.
A couple years ago, when the Mayor was asked about this issue of dogs running at large on the beach, she laughed it off, saying something along the lines of "Oh, I guess I'm guilty then". The law exists which forbids this, people know that they're not allowed to do it, yet they continue to do so, knowing that they're going to get away with it. Mayor and council hide from responsibility for facing the issue (Don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, right?) by falling back on their put-it-off excuse "We need to "educate" dog owners". My friend who likes to jog on the beach has stopped going there, since a running person is perceived as a target by dogs, and she's been attacked far too often. Another bulls**t line you'll hear from these idiot owners is that their "good, well behaved dog" is under "voice control". And don't forget, these "good dogs" don't, apparently, ever sh*t. Go try letting your mutt run loose on a beach in California, see what happens.
It's been suggested to council, many times, that an off-leash dog area be established at some location in the district, to give dog owners some alternative to running their animals at large on the beach........ NOTHING , not even a discussion or any type of proposal has ever come of it, NOTHING. Why anyone who resides in Tofino would ever get a dog, when they're fully aware that no place to legally exercise the animal exists, is beyond comprehension. Lets add a question to any dog license application...... "Where will you exercise your pet?"
This may sound ridiculous at first glance, but any reasonable person knows that a pet requires food, water, shelter, vet services, and exercise. If someone cannot supply all of these requirements, how can they reasonably expect to care for the pet properly?
There are way more dog owners than bird watchers that visit Tofino.Until there is a way to monetize shorebirds they are of no significance. If dogs were chasing away whales or bears or shitting in the Hot Springs it would be a different story......
8:06AM has a good solution....... Just allow the dogs to do whatever they like, because someone gets drunk, or lights a fire. Or am I mis-reading their comment?
Like Ranger Smith says..... it's only gonna get worse. But it is interesting to note that these dog owners avoid the National Park..... because they know full well that thet're not going to get away with their crap (and their dog's crap) there. They know the rules.....they simply don't have any respect for other people. We've all heard their lame brain justification: "Huh, don't you like dogs?"
It's not just about shorebirds. It's also about feces, health hazards, possible attacks, propery damage, and all the other cute activities that stray dogs get themselves up to. It might be someone's loved and cherished pet..... but, not looked after properly, it quickly becomes a nuisance and even a hazard.
Who's going to solve this problem? I'll suggest that the responsibility be placed on the person who decided to "get a dog".
Good one 12:32...... Let's change the subject and talk about Tax free properties. That's more comfortable for you than having someone hold you accountable for the management of your dog, right? People are fed up with tolerating the neglect of these negligent dog owners. You decided to get a dog.....now LOOK AFTER IT! What are you going to do, one day, when you have a child, and you actually have something of value that you need to be responsible for? Simply let the kid run loose and fend for itself? Or be responsible for your own impact on the world you live in?
Nice, 9:29! May we translate your comment to say "If you complain about my dog running loose and shitting on the beach, YOU got a problem, and need to get a life."............ Maybe you should back off of the moderator and clean up your own act.
my dog has just as much right to be on the beach as those transient birds! (and he does not chase them, besides i do pick up after him,so please quit tarring all dog owners with the same brush.)Man some people bitch about anything.Next it will be the warm weather!!!
What!! Your dog has a "right" to be on the beach? Lady, your dog is an invasive species. The birds are not "transients", they're migrating, they've been doing it for thousands of years, long before you or your dog invaded their territory. And there's a law that prohibits your mutt from running loose on the beach. People who think like you are the problem.
hey 4:03...i am not a "lady"so quit your jumping to conclusions! If the birds are migrating they are transient. Its a fact. and who the hell said that my dog was running loose on the beach? You are a complete joke! You are the problem. I've lived here for a very long time and the problems came with you newby's who want to change everything about this area. Must be the same writer at 10:26.Have a nice day.
Ironic that Tofino hosts a Shorebird Festival while dogs are allowed to freely chase shorebirds.Bylaw in Tofino is a joke

ReplyDeleteAs Pacific Rim National Park increases enforcement on off leash dogs expect to see more dogs on the unpatrolled beaches of Tofino.

Why don't you report on what properties get tax free status ?
