When you read that letter from Robert & Mara Love regarding the new Cop shop. you get a pretty good understanding on how things work in this 'community'
Thicke is interested in the opinion from her pickle ball friends, but excludes the opinion of a RCMP member.
Nice touch from Thicke...... publicly publish the private email addresses of a group of citizens, exposing them to identity theft, ridicule, who knows what else! Good to know that we've got "inept" representing us in government. Wonder if her ego will tolerate a corresponding public apology to these victims of her stupidity.
Ms Baert thinks.......THAT staff be directed to add the development of a Master Plan for the long-term management and operations of the Monks Point Park, formerly known as the Monks Point property, to their work plan;
Is there no one in this town with a brain (that works)? Are we going to haul in more consultants? Can no one on council put forward a few proposals, and begin a public discussion on this topic? How many hundred man-hours will "staff" plug in on this cash cow? A "Master Plan". Big Words. So is "Bullshit". How about plastering some global warming stickers all over the property? Maybe start with gathering some input from the community first (It's free!) before you start tossing tax dollars at it. (Do you know how to do anything without wasting the public's money as your first priority?) I realize that this is all pretty strange to you, Ms Baert...... It means that you ask the citizens what they think should be done, instead of Council's normal method, where the public is presented with a "fait accompli" presentation from council showing the people what council has already decided to do, documented on a grand plan with drawings, deductions, specifications, and pages upon pages of bull-haw-haw, at a cost of tens of thousands of dollars.
So when the District pushes stuff through with their "public consultation " we are told to respect the process. When some councilors don't like the way things go they go onto Facebook and other social media to rally their flake followers to demand more consultation.Councilors should resign if they won't respect democracy and insist on furthering their personal agendas.I guess they will hire a consultant and a facilitator to organize a group hug after the project is derailed.
I liked it better when the police station and jail were in the firehall. The jail was the old jail from Clayoquot and relatively easy to break out of. Seriously,it's a jail ! It is supposed to instil fear ! Just make sure that the barbed wire and chain link fence are made from recycled steel and that the patrol cars are Teslas.
Leaders, We have NOT received any negative input from the public regarding the new RCMP building. It looks like the Feds will simply build what they Need without us delaying their project or asking for our blessings I’m furious, how about you? We’re in control here. What are we gonna do ?
Greg, listen, it’s your mission is to get the uneducated screamers going on Facebook with vague info. just tell them there’s No Free Housing, No Solar Panels on the roof and that the building design is Not politically correct. Okay Cathy, you get your educated pickle ball friends motivated to write some ridiculous letters regarding a leaking roof. (you just need to figure out a way to keep that cop in the dark) When this is all done... Dorothy who loves to delay & frustrate developers with nonsense, will put forward a motion based on the "significant emerging concern from the public"
Until the general community achieves consciousness the same type of frustrating issues will continue to plague everything that threatens to happen. nothing gets done because out of left field comes the screaming injustices to protest and obstruct anything normal. the police station is being built on federal land which means it is exempt from zoning, design specs, development permit requirements etc. aside from the fact that objecting to something like this is a fool's errand, one would think that annoying the RCMP wont work out well for the community. it seems that certain council peoples have become infatuated with their own opinions supported by a small cadre of environmental egomaniacs. how could we expect that there's any real awareness of community with such self-centered activities such as these. we are exhorted to be mindful of community planning while ignoring the plan to properly treat our sewage before dumping it into the ocean.
The threats by the province and the feds have proven to be nonsense. We are free to pollute our waters as much as we like. The eco-weenies worry more about climate change and logging in other areas than the dumping of raw sewage in our own harbour.
Finally! Affordable housing!! Former Tofino Council Member has for rent, a place to park a trailer....... only $500.00 per month!! (Advertised on Tofino Rentals-Facebook)
Too bad about the Monk Property...... Great opportunity for a real community project..... Lots of folks in town who are experts at making the place pay for itself as a vacation rental..... Opportunity for volunteer gardeners.....Possibility of summer jobs for students in the maintenance and housekeeping of the property..... Could easily be managed by a community based volunteer led non-profit society..... District staff could stay OFF the property, no burden to the taxpayer..... Could lead to Museum / Historical society involvement...... Jobs for students leading informational tours?? .... First Nations involvement, Totems? ..... Lots of possibilities..... A real opportunity for the citizens of Tofino to get involved in a worthwhile project of benefit to the community..... Something that could build a sense of community, working together, opportunity for many, not just a few, to participate. ------ Unfortunately, this is going to wind up in the district office, run by district staff, at a huge expense to the taxpayer, as unionized employees "wallow at the trough". Sorry Harold, it was a nice idea, but greed is gonna destroy it.
I think we've all been waiting the councils promised action to eliminate illegal vacation rental units, b & b operations with way too many rooms to let, and figuring out air B&Bs. well that won't happen anytime soon. no.... suddenly the architecture of the new RCMP station is a much more burning issue which will probably take up all of councils energy and time until May. by May we will have forgotten all about vacation rentals or by law-enforcement's and move on.
I didn't attend this meeting, but upon hearing the reviews and some of the tactics, I offer the following.
I have seen the plans for the new RCMP building and think it would be an asset for the community. I am sure constructive comments directied at improvement would be welcome, but some councillors seem to always take an advisarial stance against developers, more senior levels of gov't etc, whoever...
I recall when the Provincial Lands branch came to meet with Tofino Council to explore the possible options for developing some of the crown lands in Tofino. Instead of engaging them, they were practically run out of town by the idealogues present. Councillors were haranguing them, saying they will never get "any' zoning approval to develope these lands, and "who do you think you think you are"."We are in control here". Drawing arbitrary lines in the sand....and not once did the question of housing, or what the province might be able to do to help, ever get introduced into the conversation.
That was a few councils ago, some of the councillors are still the same on this council. Regardless of their lineage on council, some of the new ones champion the same attitudes....Same old, same old. Selfish attitudes, false pride and self righteousness, seem to be requirements for Tofino Council...and the town suffers for it.
The artsy eco & council-weenies that are whining about design, size & location of the new RCMP building… are the same weenies who are DROOLING over the Civic Hub. ( a 12.7 million dollar, 15,948 sq/ft downtown Tofino eyesore,,, 6 X the Size of the RCMP building.) There will be 61 downtown parking spots eliminated to build this. 23 Parking Meters will be installed to help pay for the Water-view offices for Major & Staff... Wake-up Tofino
If you told these complainers that the new RCMP building would become an Eco Art Cultural Centre, they’ll be all over it and claim that this beautiful building is exactly what Tofino needs.
Councillors should not use Facebook to undermine the work of other councillors and staff.Baert , Thick and Blanchette should resign if they want to fight staff and council after a legitimate vote.
It is obvious that some members of council want to get rid of the RCMP and create a unionized municipal police force. This force would be responsible only to council.
Please, no more tax payer funded consultants (maybe it's yet another RMI consultant project?) Can we not just have council present (in any number of ways),the project, and ask for input? What more would an overpriced consultant do? We pay our staff very good wages for their expertise, why are we continuing to have to hire consultants? Lack of expertise?
Coun. Ray Thorogood needs to step way back from any discussions and/or decisions regarding the Tofino RCMP. What ever happened to "conflict of interest" or the "appearance of". His daughter works at the Tofino RCMP detachment. So does his wife. He once worked there. I have seen even the most unethical of Councillors step aside due to conflict of interest. Now is his time to do the same. Not good enough Ray!
