2010 Report to Council from Braden Smith, CAO 10% Donation to the DoT, by Godfrey Stephens. The Weeper, transportation, placement and "Historical Signage" was an estimated Total of $22.500 (and still "Open to Negotiation" at that Price !)
2013 Report to Council from Bob MacPherson, CAO NO Mention of 10% Donation to the DoT by Godfrey Stephens and we are being charged the "Private Sale Price of 30K" ! Total estimated cost: The Weeper, transportation, placement, Engineering etc.. and all the cost associated with "DoT Staff producing and Event that CELEBRATES the return of the Weepert". $50.000 to $60.000
From Tofino Rant and Rave Group on Facebook..................Mike Dauphinee Okay, so two years ago the price was $20,000. Now that there's a scent of cash, the price has suddenly jumped to $30,000. Joe Martin gave him the log, Rod Palm towed it for him..... and he carved it in less than two weeks. So it seems that he expects that his labor and "artistic input" must be worth over $2,000 per day. Good work if you can get it, eh? January 28 at 9:06pm
From Tofino Mayor Josie Osborne facebook page............... Reading the history that the mayor has posted above, it shows that one party or another has been attempting to get Tofino Council to buy this statue since at least 2001..... 13 years. Now, suddenly, in less than a month, the matter is resurrected, thrust before council, voted upon, carried and it seems that the policy is "Damm the torpedoes, full speed ahead!" ..... all this despite the fact that the price has increased by as much as 166% from the original quote.
From Mayor Osborne's facebook page----------- Greg Blee.... Council makes hundreds of decisions a year, most mundane, with little or no input from residents. That's why we pay them. But every now and again one comes along that catches fire (usually to council's surprise). I'm looking forward to the Town Hall meeting on this topic. There are good points on both sides of this discussion, and i for one really need to hear the back-and-forth.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Town Hall meeting?? Any info on this?
