Priorities

One of the roads pictured below is scheduled for a million dollar upgrade.....if you thought it would be the one under water you'd be wrong......Council is planning to upgrade the section of Campbell between 3rd and 2nd streets........while it isn't pretty it actually functions......Hellesen Drive, the only public access to Mackenzie Beach is in terrible condition and often flooded........it has been in this condition for years......just like the firehall paintjob that never got finished some things are just left to fall apart.....

  1. I too have been puzzled for the last couple of years as to why this road is in such bad condition. I would have thought that the resort at the end of this road would have attempted to improve it or at least pressure the council to improve it. The whole length is just one big pot hole.

  3. Why should the taxpayer cover costs of a poorly maintained private driveway ?

  4. Hellesen Drive is a public road. It is the only public access to Mackenzie Beach. As such it qualifies for RMI funding. Many locals use the road. The District of Tofino solution has been to put up a " Rough Road" sign. Previous councils have said that when a new resort was built at Mackenzie Beach upgrades would be part of the plan.It doesn't look like a new resort will be built any time soon .

  7. But there is already a resort on Mackenzie beach. Doesn't that one count? Why do we have to wait for a new one in order to get the road fixed?

  8. The owner of the property on the left invested a couple hundred thousand dollars to install up graded and engineered culverts under Hellesen Road and under the road to Crystal Cove. Tofino Stream Keepers participated in this project. The goal was to eliminate annual flooding....looks like wasted money and a much bigger problem that one might think.

  9. If nothing else on would thing that the district would have improved the drainage by ditching the road edges and then gravel the road base and seal it with some chip seal to keep the dust down in the dry days ! What ever happened to the master drainage plan that we paid Koers to do!

  10. Maybe the Public works department should have ditched out the culvert inlets ! That good Management of our drainage system

  13. I love how you guys take pleasure in discrediting and insulting the Pwork dept. You are right ... something will need to happen in the future regarding hellesen road. BUT.... you should all know that it only shows that you are lacking true facts to think that this project is the PW's responsibility. You are expressing your worthless opinions which are counter productive and destructive to the community and its inhabitant. It is obvious that you can only blame everyone around you for your disatisfaction... and therefor feed this stupid side of yourself that will never come up with an actual productive idea so we can all move forward ! Dont worry tho... no one expect anything from yoU ... well other than a lot of talking....

  14. The condition of Hellesen Drive has nothing to do with Public Works. It is a council decision

  16. So the Drainage and road condition of the roads that are in the village are not the responsibility of our public works department to manage ? I was under the understanding that it is part of what my taxes pay for ? Like the municipal drainage plan for storm water run off! Isnt ditching a part of that plan ? Or is part of the problem the fact that we dont really have a plan ?

  17. May be the (LIP) Local Improvement program should be in place and being followed like many others municipalities have done. Didn't we already have an engineering study done on this, to identify the places of concern and then the Public Works Management team was to put a 5 yr action plan in place . What ever happened to that plan ?

  18. I've been told that a consultant has been hired to do an assessment of all roads in Tofino. As far as the five year plan , I don't know what happened to it.....
I don't think we need to pay a consultant to tell us that Hellesen Drive goes under water....we didn't need to do an assessment of all roads to spend a million and change at 4th and Campbell.
