So the question is how does it get non-profit status, charge a fee, rent out space - I guess many NPs have CEOs with a hefty salary. So would that be George?
Good questions for Ralph or anyone else: Who exactly is on the board of the so-called Botanical Gardens Non Profit foundation and where does it benefit Tofino to the extent of gaining tax free status?
Easy enough to drop by the gardens and ask.The exemption only applies to the garden, not the cafe or hotel . At this point I'm too busy trying to figure out the debacle that is our Liquid Waste Management Plan or more accurately the lack thereof .
More weddings and a bigger percentage of ticket sales for wine fest must mean more revenue. Its easy to make any set of books look like there is no "profit." Do the right thing and pay your taxes. Tofino can use the extra 12k per year. The owner laughs when guests write reviews of the garden being a rip off. Keep taking advantage of tourists and the town and see who laughs last.
That's strange....if you look at the Tofino Botanical Gardens foundation's web site http://www.tbgf.org/foundation/board.php you will see that the field house, darwin's cafe and the vacation rental home are all listed as part of the foundation yet no property tax is paid on the gardens. This almost sounds like the working of loop holes by an American. Something does not smell right here.
Typical Tofino style... someone has power... let's cut them, or their family down. Tofino people... why must you be so judgemental? cliquey? Depressing? Betcha you don't have a gratitude jar? You should try it...focus on the positive and see where your life goes?
If we simply cut a small amount of spending on consultants it will make up for all the exemptions.Let's give Ken Gibson a break on his Rhodo garden as well .
Never could understand how the Botanical Gardens ever gained Tax free status. B.S.!
ReplyDeleteIt is registered as a non-profit foundation and as such can apply for a tax exemption.
