Many readers from away were asking for photos of the 4th and Campbell project. Here are some.....a huge project........
Many people have been asking about the hydro and telephone lines in these photos.....most say they are eyesores and why aren't they being put underground while everything is dug up ?? I confess that I had assumed that they would be going underground and will try to get some more information.......
Why is this a priority when the not all the beaches have public washrooms and parking for our visitors? Seems that people come to Tofino for our beaches, not our main intersection...
ReplyDelete1:59 While you have obviously prostituted yourself to the almighty tourist not all of us have. The improvements to 4th and Campbell are long overdue. Sidewalks too narrow, ditches too big, plugged culverts, vehicles constantly driving through the intersection. But lets make sure the tourists needs are met and that they are not inconvenienced if they need to use a washroom. Many thanks to the mayor, council and planner for showing leadership and initiative with this project. If any washrooms are built they should be at our local ballfields. Urinating and defecating on our children's play areas shouldn't be tolerated.
ReplyDeleteThe beaches are also children's playgrounds.
ReplyDelete8:40, RMI Money is to be spent to benefit tourism and bring more money to this town. Are you that magical and self-sufficient that Tourism does not have any effect of you?
ReplyDeleteWhen you see advertisements for Tofino, do you see photos of Beaches & Whales? Or do you see 4th & Campbell? I'm pretty sure that Beaches and Whales will still be the main draw even after the culverts are unplugged.
If you think the Ball Fields should be a priority, check how many people visit the ball fields, compared to MacKenzie Beach. Also consider that when you go to MacKenzie Beach, there's no parking and you just drove down a pot hole riddled road to get there...
Another question, who's defecating on the playground? Ball Players? Sounds like it from what you're saying...
It's not as though locals might not benefit from a washroom at Tonquin or MacKenzie beach.
ReplyDeleteYay Tofino! This is great news for residents and tourists!
ReplyDeleteYou nay sayers can nay say, but a welcoming, attractive, accessible, green, pedestrian friendly "revamp" will attract more businesses, tourist traffic, and dollars spent in the downtown core. Win win.
Defecating on the ball fields is disgusting! Is that still an issue? Let's give the ball players some dignity and provide public facilities. I am sure they don't like leaving their "presence" on the field. Maybe some doggie bags?
ReplyDeleteIt looks "nouveau riche" .1 block of Whistler . At least Whistler has night life and doesn't dump raw sewage in their back yard.
ReplyDeleteRaw sewage is not an issue in any area with tidal flow providing chemicals, oils, paint etc aren't part of the mix. Look at the science and not at the emotion. However, pooping and peeing on the school fields is a bit much, if this is true. Aren't there washrooms up there yet?
ReplyDelete8:40 Don't think for one moment that those are "our" ball fields... They belong to the school district, and look what they've done with the gym and how much it's cost the taxpayers thus far. Totitians, expect another big cut to your pocket for ball fields coming soon!
ReplyDeleteGood citizens don't piss or shit in a ball field because they lack a toilet. They find a washroom or go home. Same with littering, absence of a garbage bin doesn't give you the right to just drop your cigarette but, candy wrapper, or pop can. You can't legislate common sense, unfortunetly.
ReplyDeletedown the garden path we go -- same old same old -- actually the myths and biases usurp the truth -- the School District and I understand the previous principal have been trying for years to get the D of T to sign on to a Joint Use Agreement outlining rights and responsibilities for all stakeholders. lets pull our head out of the sand folks. Might be hard for some to realize but the facility is actually an elementary school and not a full on recreation centre. Obvious that we either build our own for several million or help with costs to maintain and run the school gym and fields.
ReplyDeleteMarch 6, 2013 at 11:47 PM: you raise a great question. What ARE the costs to Tofino taxpayers? It’s public information, so that means it’s available right?
ReplyDeleteBall fields? $0 for Dist. of T. The school board pays maintenance crews, materials, and equipment for maintenance and repairs of fields. And who cleans up after the ball players and community users?
Evening gym? Dist. of T paid between 17,000 - 20,000 to cover wages for an evening supervisor.
Recently the school board has asked for funds to cover costs for resurfacing the floor. This is because of heavy wear and tear. A floor can only be sanded and resurfaced so many times before there is nothing left to call a floor. What is the cost of a new gymnasium floor?
Considering the absence of recreation facilities in Tofino, it sounds like a favorable deal for Tofino. But don’t take my word. Look it up.
Or alternately let's show some support for Tofino’s own recreation centre - complete with a floor meant to withstand heavy impact and heavy use. How much would a new centre costs?
There's a porta pottie at the ball fields that the District (Tofino) is paying for... You can lead a horse to water.....
ReplyDeleteThe hydro will not be going underground on this project they will remain in the air where they currently are
ReplyDeleteThanks for that....
ReplyDeleteThat is insane that they are not putting services underground ! Who is responsible for this ?
ReplyDeleteWhat the hell is going on? Campbell St. is so full of potholes. Like the frickin' Rubicon. Would it possible to run a grader over it once in a while?
ReplyDeleteI have a 4x4. Slow going for me. Never mind how passenger cars might do.
Totally amateur job being done. Should have got the local boys to do it. Braden's animosity rears its ugly head even after he's gone.
Local boys didn't want it as it was too big a job. They are getting some work on the site. btw Anyone have any real stats on how much rain has come down lately. I've lived here a long time and it seems a little over the top lately.
ReplyDeleteThere is no reason for the roads to look they do ! has the public works manager or forman not find the cold mix ? like any other town does to patch a hole in the ashphalt! Come on Guys lets get the job done that you have been hired to do !
ReplyDeleteWe are going to be kicking our selves in the ass later about not putting the hydro in the ground. There are two alley ways on either side of Campbell that they could be routed in...
