Tsunami Update from CBC March 11 2011 9:51 pst

The tsunami advisory for British Columbia remained in effect Friday morning, after the initial effects of an 8.9-magnitude earthquake in Japan passed the province's coastline without apparent incident.

Earlier, Federal Public Safety Minister Vic Toews had announced the end of the advisory, apparently too soon. The first effects of the Japan tsunami reached Canada's West Coast at about 7:30 a.m. PT, and wave-height changes were negligible.

Glen Plummer, communications manager for Emergency Management B.C., said that as of 9:15 a.m. PT, “the tsunami advisory is still in place — it was never lifted.”
