What a crock! The housing corporation was dissolved by unnamed persons within the district so they could place their cronies in charge without oversight or supervision. Whatever the district did, did not dent the number of trailers, tents, sheds, motorhomes, and campers that people are still living in. in fact, those sub standard units increased....most likely to about 300 now. The completed buildings affordable rental criteria makes occupants into virtual slaves with a hard economic disincentive to improve income or prosperity. The incentive is to get the hell out of there as fast as you can. The alleged professional Developer has loads of experience at the expense of the district of TOFINO now. The only reason private developers weren't moving ahead is because the expense, time, bureaucracy and red tape produced by the district for any proposals requiring rezoning or OCP amendments completely discourage reasonable people/developers. They were simply pushed to the sidelines so now the housing corporation expedites their own applications, as if there was no one else waiting in line to get their development approved. The District created the problem for everyone else under the overarching limits to growth policy, water availability, and saving every tree in BC, while crowing about their success at solving the affordable housing problem. Four legs good: two legs bad. In our political world here failure is success.
So glad Mr. Law is moving on. Good riddance. He and his predecessor and the councils they served with are responsible for all of Tofino’s housing woes. Who else has been in charge? Whose brilliant idea was that? They say you get the Council you deserve. They have shut down more private sector housing proposals than you can imagine. They are in control but it is somebody else’s failure. Right! Too bad for Tofino….I feel sorry for young folks who are trying to own a home….start a family. Tofino is the most expensive place in the Province. Who did that? What a bad Joke……Goodbye Mr. Mayor…….Good riddance.
If Canadian home prices completely froze today and wages grew at their normal historic pace, it would take 18 to 20 years just for incomes to catch up enough to restore 2005 affordability levels. This doesn't factor in the fact that AI is disproportionately targeting highly educated, high earning white collar workers, so if a house drops from $1,000,000 to $600,000, it still won't be affordable for most, because few people will have the wages to pay for it. (unless you work for the District) Soon enough the majority of Canadians will live under Dan's Plan. Buckle up!!

Saying the funds for the THC come from government is misleading! They come from MRDT funds collected from Air BNB and other OTAs. 2024 was $588,133 from MRDT / Online Accommodation Platform funding , with an additional $45K coming from BC housing.

The MRDT funds are a tax, paid by citizens and businesses. Likewise the OTA funds, tax money. BC Housing? that's tax dollars too. That would easily pave Arnet Rd to the community hall, and the parking lot there too!! .....and next year......?? how many other worthwhile things are not being done in the community, because affordable housing is gobbling up the money? Notice any streets without potholes? People walking in the street because there's no sidewalk or curb?
About that eyesore at the corner of Industrial Way and the highway. It wasn’t long ago that a previous owner of the lot on that corner next to the ambulance station proposed a small manufacturing business (does that sound industrial?).…..surfboards…. along with some store fronts for retail of surf gear and rental. The proposal also committed to include a number of second story rental housing……. Project turned down by Tofino staff…. Now look what we’ve got. A number of years ago, there was a proposal for the currently treed but otherwise empty lot just south of the Weigh West, now known as the Tofino Resort and Marina. The proponents had acquired the property and proposed approximately 30 Housing units and some hwy frontage commercial. This on the basis of documents signed by the then Mayor and Administrator and acknowledged by the planner… assuring the proponents that the property had recently been included in the “downtown core” area for use and density……. After a few months of developing plans, they were presented to council……Some Councillors and a new Mayor and a new Planner said the signed letter must have been issued in error…... And the proposal was contrary to the OCP. The new council voted against the proposal 4 to 3. The property has remained empty for twenty years. Then there was the administrator who over the course of several years approved an approximate doubling of the Tourist accom in Tofino, along the highway and the ocean beaches, all got the go ahead while it was contended there was no water for any “new Housing” proposals. The increase in tourist accom created hundreds of jobs without any increases in housing…….What did that get us? We are still recovering…. Councils were too ignorant to understand what was happening or convinced themselves this was all normal, or there was nothing they could do about it. Any reasonable administration, planner or council should have recognized the need to move forward in a balanced fashion. More recently Council’s policy has determined that there will be no development of residential property south of Industrial Way, to prevent ‘sprawl’, by eliminating the majority of real estate in Tofino from contributing to any solution. Unless, of course, it is a THC “affordable” project. If Council didn’t have double standards there would be no standards at all. These are just a few of many examples over the years. You can argue the pros and cons of any specific examples, but the irrefutable fact is the fix we’re in was created by Tofino Councils and staff. It’s their inept and misguided (mis) management that is the real excuse for most of the housing problems in Tofino. And they use that as the excuse for all these affordable housing projects.
Hopefully council gets creative with the new affordable housing project and adds other revenue streams like a Safe Injection site and a Sobering Centre. It would create some good jobs and a steady cheque from the government.
Good thinking! The recovery / parole/ homeless industry is one of the largest growth sectors in the province. "needles, drugs and poverty" isn't just a slogan, it's NDP government policy. Tofino needs to get with the program.
I just realized something. Go back to the top and read the article again. Notice Dan's speech. He's not smart enough to put all those words together by himself, it actually sounds more like a submission that a lawyer would make to a judge....... Whoa!! His wife wrote this!!
