Looks like a recycled media blurb put out by the district office that is obviously dated and stale. Weren't telemetric water indicators going to be installed about 10 years ago? Aside from desalination and drilled wells being thrown out there as alternative water sources, has the district gathered in a figures on actualization and cost benefit analysis? Is it anyone's job to do this? Seems like staff would rather hire somebody to figure out how much it costs rather than call somebody up and ask them. But first somebody has to tell somebody else what to do except they don't know how to do that. So there's no back up plan and nothing has changed except more BS and virtue signalling.
I think anyone that was there remembers the Co-op meeting .A childish and rude outburst from one of the top employees of the district. No wonder nobody wants to work here.
This article looks like a puff piece. Likely initiated by the Council or through the staff. The columnist is just repeating what they're told. There is no critical thinking, analysis or alternative narrative offered.
The reader is supposed to conclude Tofino (that means DOT, Mayor and Council) are making the best of a difficult situation.....Of course Mayor and Council are continuing a multi decade tradition. Just kick the can down the road and claim hardship to the press.
Don't expect adequate water supply for another generation. What are the costs of these decisions. So housing shortages will persist for another generation ...... there will be no private sector housing development for as long as there are water shortages. That is the current and future policy.. That is what has been happening for 15 plus years. Expect it to continue for another generation.
Kiss Tofino goodbye as a community. Council is so proud of its. "Affordable Housing" but what has it cost......
About 4 million in land. Forgiveness of almost all normal requirements......DCC's Parkland etc in exchange for the most expensive housing and rental rates this town has ever seen. A town full of a small pool of residents expected to do more and more. Trailers and old motorhomes passing as housing...illegally..... Combined with tripling of residential tax rates.
Good night..., someone...the last person leaving, please turn out the lights.
Tofino beach lodge when completed will most likely consume 14,400 gallons of water per day. add that to all the other cubic meters of water being consumed by newly built or approved projects and I think that equals trouble.....nothing to see here folks....move along
This project, this Tofino Beach Lodge is fantastic. I hear that every employee will be trained to inhale carbon dioxide and exhale pure oxygen, thereby neutralizing all elements of climate change and bring harmony to the world. It's the future of Tofino....gotta have it.
That was the project planned for Mackenzie Beach between all the other resorts (next to Crystal Cove). Pre-zoned but not likely to get a DP under the current climate. Also seems like a riparian nightmare!
To 2:25 Already Zoned Commercial properties have been given a green light for the last fifteen years.
Think major expansions at Club Z, Pacific Sands(major expansion) and adjacent campgrounds. All DP necessary and went ahead. What makes you think the already zoned site beside Crystal Cove on Mackenzie Beach would be held up.....I know there were fisheries issues but that is not a DOT thing. Shed some light.... At the time of the rezoning They even paid a cash amount to the DOT as an Amenity contribution if memory serves me correct. Just asking.
Seems like protected land designated as parks or trails isn't really protected at all. If someone in the DOT office wants to grab a slice of our public lands for their project, our parks, trails, and beaches are all fair game. Thankfully, the province protects the beaches.
Sharpe Rd. affordable housing all built upon public park land.
Headquarters, takes nice slice of Tonquin Trail, turns it into parking lot.
Centennial Park, raped, trees gone, garden destroyed, turned into an industrial pumping site.
Tonquin Trail, converted to industrial supply and service corridor, trees chopped(and left lay there to rot rather than being harvested), forest destroyed, plant life eliminated, access points trashed. OMG, it's like a stroll through the Vimy Ridge battlefield!
What public lands will council designate as additional parkland in the district, to compensate the public for the loss of parkland to district projects?
Yep, at least someone reined in the Einstein that wanted to turn the beaches into places for rich people to run their dogs loose. Score one for nature!
What about Monk's Point? Wasn't that supposed to be a "public" asset? Why is one of the nicest pieces of Tofino closed to the public who own it? There was talk of a museum or first nations cultural center or some such facility to put those gardens and views to use, by residents and visitors alike, as the original donor of the land intended. DOT is missing a golden virtue signalling opportunity.
Those people who donated Monk's Park....ah the Monks....They were old Tofino...times have changed. We have a new way of looking at things now! It is called screw you... you old people. We are Government and we can do whatever we want. We know what is best for your land. It is not yours anymore. Just piss off. We don't know what it should be just what it should not be....We need to erase history to move forward....
History will not get in the way of the Woke anti colonial agenda....Maybe we paint the whole fricken place with trans pride rainbows. Take that you settler scum.
Not sure the writer at 8:47 knows why a certain member of district turned his back on the board at the coop meeting. The chairman outright lied but since it was his report no one could talk. The staff member was so angry at the lies he turned his back to show his protest.
Are you saying that someone was lying when they appeared on the TV saying Tofino has lots of water, more rain was coming blah blah blah?… meanwhile, in the municipal hall the prince of darkness was telling supplicants there was no water for anything?
To 8:58 Staff seems to have lots of spine when not doing their jobs. When doing their jobs it's....kissy kissy rear end hissy. Just mudddle muddle toil and trouble...But in the end who will defend.... the truth.

With no water, no development, no housing etc. why in gods name do we need a planner? What is there to plan?
Lots of water for certain segments of the population, those "more equal than others".

@5:14 BRILLIANT! I nominate you for mayor;)

Where is the lodge being built?

At the end of Hellison Drive on the left. District approved about 75 units 25 years ago or so.
